Downtown Camden Opens RECtangle Pocket Park

CAMDEN, N.J. – Camden Special Services District (CSSD) has opened the RECtangle Pocket Park, a new public parklet on Downtown Camden’s Market Street commercial corridor that turns a large, previously unused parcel into a space for everyday gathering, pop-up events and community programming.

CSSD staff and partners were joined by Camden Mayor Victor G. Carstarphen, local dignitaries, community leaders, sponsors and representatives from area colleges and hospitals for a ribbon cutting and grand opening that featured remarks, live music, tours, and food and drink from Downtown Camden restaurants and businesses.

Located at 209-211 Market Street and operated by the Camden Business Improvement District (CBID), the RECtangle is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The park is furnished with picnic tables, lounge chairs and lawn games, and invites residents, workers, students and visitors to eat lunch, read, relax or socialize outdoors.

“Camden Special Services District is proud to bring a brand new park and community space to life in the Market Street commercial corridor,” said Kristine Kennedy, Executive Director of Camden Special Services District. “This is a great win for Downtown Camden as RECtangle brings new life to an unused plot of land and brings another outdoor option where the community and businesses can come together. This is phase one of the project in time for fall and the holidays for us to launch before 2027 and host some pop-up events including a holiday market. Look for phase two in the spring where we will announce more embellishments, call for partners and launch a spring/summer of events here.”

“It’s exciting to activate yet another public space in downtown Camden which our residents, employees, and visitors can enjoy,” said Mayor Carstarphen. “These types of open spaces help to support the vibrant environment we are working to foster citywide. This will be a relaxing place where people can gather, socialize, and enjoy special events. We are grateful to the Camden Business Improvement District for their efforts to activate these underutilized locations. In 2027, we look forward to rolling out a full schedule of fun and family-friendly programming at RECtangle Pocket Park.”

A Two-Phase Launch

Phase 1 runs from the October 1 grand opening through the park’s winter close on December 16, 2026. CBID-hosted programs during this period will include a pumpkin painting party and a December holiday market.

Phase 2 begins in spring 2027, when the park reopens for the full season. In addition to daily open hours, CBID plans to host regular farmers and flea markets, with details to be announced pending budget. Local organizations will be able to host activities and meetings in the park, and the space will be available to rent for larger functions.

Why It Matters for Downtown Camden

Economic development: Steps from Downtown businesses, the park encourages visitors to support nearby takeout restaurants, coffee shops and delis. It activates a vacant lot and serves as a proof of concept for similar anti-blight efforts.

Placemaking: Market Street connects City Hall, the Waterfront attractions and the Rutgers University–Camden campus, making it a natural home for a flexible social space where people can stay a while, have a conversation or play a game.

Bringing people together: The park sits near numerous downtown offices, Rutgers University–Camden and the Cooper Grant neighborhood. As a Reimagining the Civic Commons grantee city, Camden is investing in park spaces with programming for people of all socioeconomic backgrounds.

The opening adds to a year of momentum for Downtown Camden, which has seen several high-profile grand openings, including three Black-owned, female-owned restaurants opening in a row, with more openings and developments on the way.
