NJDOT Traffic Advisory

(Trenton) – I-676 southbound is scheduled have lane and ramp closures Friday night as a bridge replacement and paving project advances in Camden and Gloucester City, Camden County.

I-676 southbound Lane Closure

Beginning at 9 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, October 23 until 6 a.m. Saturday, October 24, a single lane on I-676 southbound is scheduled to be closed between the Bridge over Newton Creek (mile post 0.6) and the I-76 Connector (mile post 0.2). Construction is expected to begin in the left lane and move to the right as work progresses. The closure is necessary to restripe the roadway and shift traffic. At least one lane will be maintained overnight.

By 2 p.m. Saturday, October 24, two lanes of traffic on I-676 southbound will be shifted to the left onto the newly built bridge deck, beginning before the bridge over Newton Creek. A single right lane will be maintained to the right of the work zone to maintain access to Exit 1A to Route 130 North/Route 168 South/Camden/Trenton. This pattern is necessary to demolish and reconstruct the I-676 southbound bridge deck and parapet with precast materials. The lane closure is expected to remain in place through December 2026.

Motorists are advised to slow down, use caution and expect delays when traveling through the work zone.

I-676 southbound Ramp Closure

Beginning at 9 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, October 23, the ramp from Collings Road to I-676 southbound will be closed and detoured through December 2026. The closure is necessary to maintain safe traffic operations, as the new traffic pattern on I-676 southbound significantly shortens the on-ramp acceleration lane, creating potentially dangerous conditions for motorists on and entering the roadway. The following detour will be in place:

Collings Road ramp to I-676 southbound Detour:

  • Motorists on Collings Road will be directed to take the ramp to I-676 northbound
  • Take Exit 3 to Holtec Boulevard/Port Terminals/Broadway/Gloucester
  • Turn left onto Holtec Boulevard
  • Stay right and continue underneath I-676
  • Take the first ramp to I-676 southbound

This work is part of a $73.2 million federally funded bridge replacement and pavement improvement project in Camden and Gloucester City, Camden County. The project will replace the I-76/I-676 Bridge over the Main Branch of Newton Creek, the I-676 southbound Bridge over the Main Branch of Newton Creek and the I-76 Bridge over Nicholson Road. In addition, the project will improve safety and pavement conditions on I-76 and I-676, as well as replace noise barriers, upgrade drainage, update sign structures and install intelligent transportation systems (ITS) throughout the corridor.

Construction of precast bridge deck panels began last year and is taking place off-site. Replacement of the bridge decks began in August 2026 and will require lane closures. NJDOT will provide advanced notification of any traffic impacts prior to work taking place.

This work supports the Sherrill Administration’s commitment to improving the transportation network that helps people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state.

Variable Message Signs will provide advance notification to motorists of traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
