Although some in the Party will deny it, the 2006 feud between The New Democrats and The Old Democrats in Gloucester City continues. If you need proof just look at the number of names (29 in all) that will be listed on the June 2 Primary Election ballot. It is apparent there is a difference of opinion on the best way to govern the City. I have been told though this rift is unlike others that have occurred in previous years; this in fact is personal to some of the candidates.
The challengers this time are the OLD DEMS running under the slogan, Real Gloucester Democrats while the NEW DEMS are running under the banner Camden County Democrat Committee, Inc. There is one council candidate, Ray Coxe, former Democrat Party Chairman, running under the banner Experienced Democrat Leadership. The deadline for filing petitions for the Primary was April 6.
The divide between the two sides began three years ago when the now incumbent Mayor, Bill James, and his incumbent council members Nick Marchese, Jay Brophy had the nerve to challenge the old regime of Democrats backed by the Camden County Norcross Political Machine. The fact that these three political unknowns were able to up seat the Machine in the November election that year was a surprise to many.
