The passing of Ted Kennedy last week has left a void in both the United States Senate and in the fight for health care reform. At the age of 77 Kennedy left behind not only a loving family and a lifetime of public service but a Senate seat that’s he had called his own since 1962. Serving the people of Massachusetts as well as the United States was important to Kennedy, which was why in his last months he devoted much of his energy to changing a law that determine what would happen to his seat upon his passing.

In 2004 a law was passed tin Massachusetts that called for a special election to held to replace Kennedy’s Senate seat a few months after his passing instead of the governor appointing someone. Kennedy knew how crucial his vote would be in the healthcare fight and how important it was at this time for the state of Massachusetts to be represented by two people in the senate.
