On June 3, 2026, at the age of 58, Valerie passed peacefully at AristaCare in Cherry Hill. Formerly of Cinnaminson. Survived by her daughters, Adrienne Hunt and Alexandra Mason; her longtime companion, Reginald Trent; Brothers, Michael Mason and Robert Mason, Jr. Predeceased by her parents, Robert Mason, Sr. and Barbara Mason.

Rowan Earns Academic All-District Team

Rowan field hockey players Paige Gray, Tess Herman and Gracie Merrick and lacrosse players Yasmin Harris, Fiona Lockhart and Jenna O’Neill have been selected to the 2025-26 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Women’s At-Large Team.

Herman picks up her second Academic All-District honor while she will also be looking to repeat on the CSC Academic All-America team, which will be announced on July 7.

Gray (Easthampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional) is a sophomore finance major who was a starter for the Profs’ defense, which limited the opponents to just 1.7 goals per game. The sophomore also contributed one goal and three assists on the year. She was named an NFHCA Scholar of Distinction and was selected to the NFHCA Academic Squad.

Herman (Berlin, NJ/Eastern Regional), a sports communication and media major, was named to the NFHCA All-America Second Team in back-to-back seasons. She captured her second NJAC Defensive Player of the Year award and earned her third consecutive selection to both the All-Region IV First Team and the All-NJAC First Team.

Merrick (Phillipsburg, NJ), a junior exercise science major, received All-Region IV First Team honors while also being named to the All-NJAC First Team. Merrick, who contributed three goals and five assists, was named to the NFHCA Academic Squad and was inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma National Student-Athlete honor society.

DEP Forest Fire Service Releases First Annual Wildfire Report

The DEP Forest Fire Service released a report on the 2025 wildfire season that saw substantial increases in the number of wildfires and acreage burned statewide, and reminds residents and visitors to New Jersey of the important role they have in protecting their communities and reducing wildfire risk.

The report is the first of what will become an annual analysis by the Forest Fire Service looking back at the previous year’s wildfire metrics in the context of wildfire trends, causes and response efforts, while helping New Jerseyans better understand the need for wildfire vigilance to help protect lives and property. Of the 1,322 wildfires that burned 27,229 acres statewide last year, nearly all were caused by humans, according to the report. The figures represent a 22% increase in the number of wildfires and a 116% increase in acreage burned compared with the 20-year average.

“Public education and awareness are part of our comprehensive strategy to understand wildfire risk in New Jersey,” said Acting Commissioner Potosnak. “This report is a key component of that approach, helping to explain the many factors influencing wildfires and how communities can partner with the Forest Fire Service to prevent them.”

The 2025 report is available on the Forest Fire Service’s website at wildfire.nj.gov, and on the agency’s social media profiles on Instagram, X and Facebook.

“The Forest Fire Service’s first annual report provides a detailed look at wildfire activity in New Jersey and the factors driving it,” said John Cecil, Assistant Commissioner for State Parks, Forests & Historic Sites. “Understanding the scope and causes of wildfire activity helps us better protect New Jersey’s forests and communities and is an important step in improving transparency and guiding future prevention efforts.”

Rowan’s Mason Dorsey Chosen to ABCA Region All-Defensive Team

Rowan’s Mason Dorsey has been named to the 2026 ABCA NCAA Division III Region IV All-Defensive Team as voted on by members of the American Baseball Coaches Association.

Dorsey (Hammonton, NJ/St. Augustine Prep), the Profs’ centerfielder, posted a .992 fielding percentage this season, committing only one error in 126 total chances.
