(New York, N.Y. – August 11, 2015) Officials from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today marked the completion of a water line extension that will provide a safe source of drinking water to 73 homes and businesses threatened by contaminated groundwater from the Combe Fill South Landfill Superfund site in Chester and Washington Townships in N.J. As a result, those homes and local businesses will no longer need treatment systems. EPA Superfund Director Walter Mugdan and Chester Township Mayor Bill Cogger marked the milestone with a toast of clean drinking water.
\”This water line will permanently supply clean drinking water to homes and businesses that had previously gotten their water from groundwater threatened by the landfill contamination,\” said EPA Region 2 Superfund Director Walter Mugdan. \”The completion of the water line is the culmination of a partnership between the EPA, Chester and Washington Townships and the Washington Township Municipal Utilities Authority.\”

A new analysis of data from the 2012 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) has found that most American adults have experienced some level of pain, from brief to more lasting pain, and from relatively minor to more severe pain. The analysis helps to unravel the complexities of a Nation in pain. It found that an estimated 25.3 million adults (11.2 percent) had pain every day for the preceding 3 months. Nearly 40 million adults (17.6 percent) experience severe levels of pain. Those with severe pain are also likely to have worse health status. The analysis was funded by the National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) and was published in The Journal of Pain.

Briggs, M.D., director of NCCIH. \”This analysis adds valuable new scope to our understanding of pain and could inform the National Pain Strategy in the areas of population research and disparities. Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell announced today $169 million in Affordable Care Act funding to 266 new health center sites in 46 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico for the delivery of comprehensive primary health care services in communities that need them most. These new health center sites are projected to increase access to health care services for over 1.2 million patients. These awards build on the $101 million awarded to 164 new health center sites in May 2015.

The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife has officially certified, and is pleased to announce, the first entry of a Cobia in the Spearfishing Category of the State Record Saltwater Fish Program.
William Maier of Medford, New Jersey, was off Cape May on July 17, 2015 when he speared the record fish. The fish weighed in at 60 pounds, measuring 56\” in length with a girth of 27\”.
William was out with his father on his 20\’ Boston Whaler the Go Away. He was freediving in 40 ft. of water and saw 3 cobia swimming towards him. He shot the largest with a Riffe Euro 100cm. The fish ran hard and took about 50 yds. of line off the reel. Surfacing, William locked down the line and was towed around for about 15 minutes without the fish tiring. A follow-up shot slowed the fish and allowed William to swim down, get his arms around the fish and swim it to the surface and into the boat.

Bordentown, just below Trenton, might seem like the end of the earth for many in South Jersey, but that have a very fine collection of good restaurantsright on Farnsworth Avenue. (FarnsworthAvenue is easily reached by taking Route 295 North from South Jersey, getting off at the Route 130 North exit and making a left at the first traffic light on Farnsworth Avenue. Stay to the left as soon as you get on Route 130. There is no jughandle. Just stay left.
The restaurant area is about a mile down, surrounded by a number of interesting shops and businesses, perfect for taking a walk before or after dinner. There is also a NJ Light Rail Line within easy walking distance, so anyone near the Riverline can take the train there instead.
