THE WEST MARKET ST. REDEVELOPMENT– Any long time resident of Gloucester City will recall the numerous development studies that have been announced for the community by politicians since the 1980\’s. For example there was The Hollywood East Plan, followed by The King Street Corridor Plan, the 1995 Master Plan to redevelop Broadway, The Irish Theme Village, the Southport Development, and The Gloucester Point project just to mention a few. 

Hundreds of thousands of dollars if not millions have been spent over the years for consultant fees, architect designs and other related costs for these plans. The upper floor of the municipal building at Broadway and Monmouth Street is stacked to the ceiling with the remnants of drawings and paperwork gathering dust.

There is always a big fanfare surrounding the announcement of these grandiose ideas but for one reason or another these plans never make it off the drawing board.

\’UNZ\’ worked for over 30 years for John Snyder at FM & W Drilling in Bellmawr as a well driller. He was a graduate of Gloucester Catholic High School Class of 1983. James was a parishioner of Saint Mary’s R.C. Church in Gloucester City. He was a former member of the Gloucester City Dart League at Caps and Highland Tavern. 

Born in Camden City, he was the son of the late Harry and Jane (nee Hansen) Underwood. 

Survived by his wife, Kathy and devoted children Kasey, Joey and Krystal. The youngest of 7 children he is survived by his siblings: Rich, Harry, Tom, Phil, Lou and Jane Ellen. Survived by many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend his visitation on Wednesday from 5 pm to 7 pm at the McCANN-HEALEY FUNERAL HOME: 851 Monmouth Street, (at Brown Street) Gloucester City. Catholic Service 7 pm officiated by Deacon Joe Rafferty from Saint Mary’s R.C. Church. Cremation and Inurnment private.

Tradition is a wonderful thing, and Duffy\’s stands tall. For ninety years, Duffy\’s has provided excellent chocolates at their original location at 29 N. Broadway in Gloucester City. That location also carries delicious gummy spearmint leaves and orange slices. Love the spearmint leaves. 

Duffy\’s is a family owned business and a Gloucester City tradition, one of the City\’s oldest businesses. They are renowned for their \”Irish Potatoes\” which they sell a ton of around St. Patrick\’s Day. If you\’re a Gloucester resident, and haven\’t been to Duffy\’s – and there are actually some who haven\’t – take a walk over for some real taste treats.

WOODBURY NJ–Ronald Boettcher Jr. (DOB 10/30/68), of Deptford NJ, was sentenced today to eight years in New Jersey state prison after pleading guilty to possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

Although the plea was to a third-degree crime, which has a sentencing range of three to five years in prison, Boettcher’s record of prior drug convictions in Gloucester and Camden counties dating back to 2000 made him eligible for an extended term of confinement.

The juveniles bailed out of the vehicle in the area of the 300 block of North Main Avenue with several officers, including Patrolman Wilding, chasing them on foot. Patrolman Wilding jumped over a small wall behind a restaurant at 301 North Main Avenue, not realizing that there was a 15-foot drop on the other side. He suffered a serious head injury as the result of the fall.

He was transported to Geisinger Community Medical Center where he remained until succumbing to his injuries early the next morning.

Passed on July 7, 2015. He was beloved husband of 43 years to the late Carmel Vogel (nee Amorebella). Devoted father of Robert L. Vogel and Hugh J. Vogel, Jr. (Janice); brother of Harry A. Vogel, Jr. (Cathyann), Patricia Ann (Charlie) Fagan and Louis J. Vogel, Sr. (Sandee) and his trusty dog \”Buddy.\”

Hughie was a career Camden City Firefighter, served as Captain and later Chief Union Negotiator. He graduated from Gloucester Catholic High School where he played on the football team. His sense of humor and contagious laugh will be missed.
