More than 14,000 deer harvested for only the fifth time in state’s history

DOVER (March 11, 2015) – Delaware hunters harvested 14,239 deer during the 2014-2015 season, only a slight decrease from last season’s total 14,263, DNREC’s Division of Fish & Wildlife announced today. The 2014-15 deer harvest ranks as the fourth all-time highest deer harvest for Delaware. 

\”We anticipated that hunters would have a successful season this year due to favorable habitat conditions resulting from the cool and wet spring and summer,\” said Deer and Furbearer Biologist Joe Rogerson, Division of Fish & Wildlife. \”Delaware’s highest deer harvest occurred during the 2004-05 season, with 14,669 deer. This past season, we were only a few hundred deer from setting an all-time record.\”

The call initially created consternation on the part of the child’s mother and Police due to the fact that it was received around the same time as school dismissal and the child had not return home immediately after school. Lindenwold Police Officers immediately mustered resources to begin an exhaustive search and investigation.

About a half hour into the search and investigation the girl was located unharmed at her friend’s house located near her home. 

DOVER (March 11, 2015) – Anglers eager for opening day of trout season on Saturday at Tidbury Pond near Dover and Newton Pond near Greenwood are cautioned not to attempt to break ice on the ponds in order to fish in them, DNREC’s Division of Fish & Wildlife urged today.

\”The recent extremely cold weather produced thick ice on many ponds, including our two downstate trout ponds, and despite this week’s rain and warmer temperatures, there’s still a lot of ice left on Tidbury and Newton ponds,\” said Michael Stangl, DNREC Fisheries trout stocking program manager. \”No boats of any type are permitted on Tidbury Pond,\” he stressed. \”And we strongly caution anglers against taking a boat out to break up ice, trying to break ice from shore, or certainly not walking on ice that might not be thick enough to support your weight. Anglers should not attempt to cross any ice to get to open water.\”
