Another Atlantic City Casino Faces Closure

 

ATLANTIC CITY — It seemed like the safest bet ever to Jean Gallagher when she gave up a career in nursing 33 years ago to become a buffet beverage server at the brand new Tropicana Casino and Resort. For almost a decade she worked the fast-paced room, often running from table to table to make sure that gamblers got fed and watered and back to the gaming floor quickly.

When the Trump Taj Mahal threw open its garish, gilded doors just up the boardwalk in 1990, Gallagher moved to the best new buffet table in this then-booming east-coast gambling Mecca.

Letters: Sick and Tired of Self-Serving Politicians

To the Editor:

I like columnist Tom Moran. He doesn\’t pander to politicians. But I could get only about halfway \"6a00d8341bf7d953ef019b00b0fa85970d-200wi\" through his lengthy front page piece (\”Repairing His Image,\” South Jersey Times, Nov. 23) on the efforts of George E. Norcross III to repair his tainted image and morph into a kinder, gentler Democratic Party boss in New Jersey.

I just couldn\’t repair my own tainted image of Norcross.

I don\’t know the guy. My impression comes merely from following his wheeling-and-dealing and controversies in a wealth of newspaper headlines over the years. Norcross embodies everything that turns people off to many politicians these days: Boorish, big on bluster, short on charm, punishing to enemies, often inflicting political pain for political gain.

You might call it getting \”Norcrossed.\”

Chicago Scene of Double Shooting, One Killed

 

CHICAGO — A teenage boy was killed and a second boy was injured in a shooting Friday afternoon in Chicago. The shooting in the city\’s Chicago Lawn neighborhood happened at about 3:30 p.m. on West 64th Place, said Chicago Police spokesman Veejay Zala. FBI — Philadelphia Trio Charged with Sex Trafficking

Kevino Graham, 33, Brian Wright, 38, and Renato Teixeira, 24, of Philadelphia, PA were charged today by indictment with two counts of sex trafficking by force, announced United States Attorney Zane David Memeger.

According to court documents, between May 2009 and August 2013, the defendants ran a striptease club and brothel, which they called \”Passionate Touch,\” at a property they leased in the Cathedral Park section of Philadelphia. It is alleged that Graham ran the club while Wright collected the money and Teixeira helped to recruit females to work for the venture and posted prostitution advertisements for the females. It is further alleged that between on or about September 1, 2011, through on or about January 31, 2012, the defendants engaged in acts of force, threats, fraud and coercion to cause young women to engage in prostitution.

Elia Yates (nee Corda), on November 29, 2014, of Mt. Ephraim, formerly of Camden. Age 94.

Beloved wife of the late John W. Devoted mother of Arlene Murphy (Tom), Shirley LeBano (Stephen), and Andrea Andrews (Tim). Loving Grandmother of Christine, Lauren, Richard, Stephanie and Rachel. Dear sister of Vincent Cordo \”Jimmy\”, Elsie Menaquale, the late Guido Corda, Joseph Corda, and Gilda Saponare. Also survived by nieces and nephews.

There will be a viewing from 9:15am to 10:15am Thursday morning at GARDNER FUNERAL HOME, RUNNEMEDE.

Funeral Mass 11am St. Rose of Lima Parish, Sacred Heart RC Church, 11 N. Black Horse Pike, Mt. Ephraim, NJ.

Interment New St. Mary\’s Cemetery, Bellmawr.

Carol R. McKernan (nee Malino), passed away peacefully at home on November 30, 2014, of Runnemede. Age 74. 

Preceded in death by her loving parents, Elsa and John Atson. Devoted and loving mother of Cathy Pagano (Chalie) and Jackie Hoffer. Beloved Gram of April Krause (Tim), Nick Pagano (Stephenie), and Sheri Pagano and great gram of Erica Moore, Nicholas Pagano, Ryan Pagano, Keira Krause, Brett Krause, and the late Cayla Pagano. Dear sister of Elsa Atson and Ross Malino. 

Carol had many wonderful friends and was loved by all. She retired from Pathmark in 2000 having never missed work because of her devotion to being a mother and father to her daughters. She was a member of Local 56 Women’s Network and of Runnemede Seniors. 

There will be a viewing from 7 to 9pm Friday eve and from 8:15 to 9:15am Saturday morning at GARDNER FUNERAL HOME, RUNNEMEDE. 

Funeral Mass 10am Saturday at Holy Child Parish, St. Teresa’s RC Church, Runnemede. 

Interment St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Chews Landing.

Mayor Nutter\’s Paid Sick Leave Commission Releases Report

Philadelphia, December 1, 2014– Mayor Michael A. Nutter accepted the Mayor’s Task Force \"071123\"on Paid Sick Leave final report, containing recommendations on Paid Sick Leave policies in the City of Philadelphia. The report has a series of recommendations including: requiring employers with 15 or more employees to provide paid sick leave to qualifying employees, requiring employers with fewer than 15 employees to provide unpaid, earned sick time that follows the paid sick leave accrual requirements, a wait period for use and accrual of sick leave hours, retention of existing employer policies if they satisfy or exceed the accrual requirements, and requiring employers to keep records of hours worked, earned time accrued and sick time taken by employees for a period of two years.

\”Paid sick leave is a complicated policy question that profoundly impacts employees and employers,\” said Nutter. \”I did not support previous Paid Sick Leave legislation in the past because of the possible significant losses of job opportunities and the overall state of the regional economy. I do not want to put Philadelphia at a competitive disadvantage. However, our city’s economy continues to grow and is stronger than it has been in a long time.
