Destin joins 1,000-point club during Raptors’ loss at GMU

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Penn. (Jan. 6, 2020) – Senior forward

became the 14th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point career milestone as the Rutgers University-Camden men’s basketball team pushed host Gwynedd Mercy University to the limit before falling, 78-73, in a non-conference game here Monday night.

The loss drops the Scarlet Raptors to 4-7, while the Griffins improve to 9-4.

Destin became the first Scarlet Raptor to join the 1,000-point club since Dane Nicholson reached the milestone during the 2006-07 season. It didn’t take him long to join the lofty plateau, as he scored on a layup only 2:10 into the game to notch points 1,000 and 1001. That layup gave the Raptors a 4-3 lead.

The score remained close throughout the game as the Griffins built a 38-33 halftime lead and saw the Scarlet Raptors close to within one point, 65-64, on a foul shot by Destin with 4:57 remaining. A three-point play by Gwynedd-Mercy freshman guard Nathaniel Walker made it a 68-64 game, but Raptor junior guard

closed the game to 68-66 with a layup with 4:29 remaining.

A layup by Walker and a pair of foul shots by senior guard Jeff Seigafuse gave the Griffins a 72-66 lead with 3:07 remaining, but Raptor freshman forward

sliced that deficit in half with a trey. Moments later, Trow added a steal that led to a foul and a free throw by Azemi, making it a 72-70 game with 2:06 remaining.

Dunham followed with a pair of foul shots to make it 74-70, but Azemi answered with two free throws of his own, making it a 74-72 game with 1:07 remaining. In the final minute, Dunham’s layup gave Gwynedd Mercy a 76-72 lead before a free throw by Azemi sliced the gap to 76-73 with 37 seconds remaining.

When the Griffins missed a field goal attempt with 26 seconds remaining, Destin grabbed the rebound to give the Scarlet Raptors a chance for a late game-tying three-point attempt. The shot was off target, however, and the Griffins grabbed the rebound, were fouled and closed out their win with a pair of free throws by freshman guard Manny Clark.

Dunham paced the Griffins with 26 points, while Seigafuse notched 14 and senior forward Austin Harriott added 11. Dunham added four assists and a game-high six steals.

Rutgers-Camden placed five players in double digits, with Azemi scoring 18 and adding game-high totals of eight rebounds and seven assists. Trow scored 13, Destin netted 12 and both sophomore forward

The Griffins shot 23-for-46 (50.0 percent) from the floor and held a 32-25 advantage off the boards. Rutgers-Camden was 26-for-56 (46.4) from the floor.

Destin, who earned a pair of NJAC Rookie of the Week honors as a freshman and captured NJAC Honorable Mention during his sophomore season, now owns 1,011 points (13.7 ppg) in 74 career games at Rutgers-Camden. He also has 473 rebounds for a 6.4 average.

Rutgers-Camden hosts Ramapo College in an 8 p.m. New Jersey Athletic Conference game Wednesday.

Rutgers Dental School Receives Funding to Expand Care for Patients With Disabilities

Rutgers School of Dental Medicine will get a $250,000 boost for the only dental clinic in the region that provides care to patients with disabilities and on the autism spectrum.

The Rutgers School of Dental Medicine (RSDM) – which offers the only dental clinics in the region providing care to patients with disabilities –  will be able to treat more special-needs patients because of new state funding expected to receive final approval from Governor Murphy.

The bill, which would give RSDM $250,000, was introduced by state assemblyman Dan Benson (D-14) in the spring and overwhelmingly passed the state senate and assembly. The governor has 45 days to give final approval.

“We deeply appreciate all of those who recognize how important it is that everyone, without exception, have access to oral health care,” said Cecile A. Feldman, dental school dean who thanked supporters for these much-needed funds. “Additional resources mean that we can provide  care on a wider scale.’’

John Barnosky, the father of a special-needs patient who is on the autism spectrum, advocated strongly for funds to support RSDM’s Delta Dental of New Jersey Special Care Center, which trains dentists to work with patients who have disabilities.

“Disability can happen to anyone. It’s a bipartisan issue,’’ said Barnosky. “The approval of this bill shows that you can make a difference and be a voice for those who can’t speak for themselves.’’

A severe shortage of special-needs dentists, and a booming population of patients with physical disabilities and behavioral disorders, has left special-needs providers at

RSDM

and beyond struggling to meet the demand.

The dental school, the largest oral health care provider in the state, logged 7,757special-needs patient visits in 2017. In New Jersey, more than 10 percent of the population has at least one disability, a figure that totals 911,300.

Nationwide, 48 percent of patients with disabilities had no dental check-up within a year, compared to 35 percent without disabilities, according to a 2016 study published in the

Journal of Public Health Dentistry.

Barnosky’s son, Peter, 28, can be combative during check-ups. Since so few dentists are willing to provide even routine treatment, like cleanings and fillings, he often had to wait months for a non-emergency visit at RSDM.

Many dental offices lack ramps for wheelchairs, doorways that are wide enough for gurneys to fit through and other accommodations.  But one of the greatest obstacles is dentists who lack training and experience. In addition to treating special-needs patients, RSDM trains all students to work with patients with disabilities.

According to Feldman, extra staffing and additional surgical resources to treat the many special care patients who need general anesthesia will greatly bolster RSDM’s clinical and educational mission.

ICE HSI Nogales exposes drug tunnel

ICE\’s HSI special agents and taskforce officers on BEST executed a federal search warrant late Tuesday night and discovered a tunnel along the U.S. Mexico border, seizing nearly 200 lbs. of methamphetamine, almost two pounds of white heroin, close to three pounds of cocaine, over six and a half pounds of fentanyl, in addition to arresting two individuals and seizing one vehicle.

NOGALES, Ariz. – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agents and taskforce officers on the Border

Enforcement Security Task Force (BEST) executed a federal search warrant late Tuesday night and discovered a tunnel along the U.S. Mexico border, seizing nearly 200 lbs. of methamphetamine, almost two pounds of white heroin, close to three pounds of cocaine, over six and a half pounds of fentanyl, in addition to arresting two individuals and seizing one vehicle.

The tunnel that runs from the residence on North Morley to the IOI measures eight feet deep and stretches 82 feet (entry to breach of the IOI). The IOI is a gravity wastewater pipeline that runs from Nogales, Sonora, Mexico to Rio Rico, Arizona. The reinforced passageway features a sophisticated ventilation system equipped with tubing reinforced by several 2 x 4\’s and beams allowing for crawlspace. Special agents estimate the tunnel has been in existence for a few months due to the advanced construction and material used to excavate.

\”It comes at no surprise that HSI special agents on the BEST and those on the Joint Port Enforcement Group (JPEG) dismantled an operational drug tunnel along the border,\” said Scott Brown, special agent in charge for HSI Phoenix. \”As this investigation makes clear, we remain focused on exposing border crime and combatting the cartels\’ increasingly unabashed underground smuggling tactics.\”

The investigation began earlier this year when investigators received information that a drug trafficking organization was smuggling large quantities of narcotics through the IOI. As the investigation progressed, HSI special agents obtained evidence to present to a federal judge for a search warrant. That evening, while executing the search warrant, agents uncovered the receiving end of the tunnel.

Those arrested, Jovany Robledo-Delgado and Jesus Martinez Selgado, both citizens of Mexico, were presented to the U.S. Attorney\’s Office for the District of Arizona in Tucson on charges of possession and conspiracy to distribute hard narcotics. They were initialed in federal court Wednesday afternoon.

The defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Lady Lions Dedicated 2019-2020 Season

The Gloucester City Lady Lions hosted visiting Clearview in a battle of ladies basketball. But for those in attendance the pre-game ceremonies is what many came to witness. Frank Keith, father of Lions center Emily suddenly passed away 2 days before their season opener was a fixture seated in the Lions bleacher as dedicated supporter of GHS. Frank\’s daughter Emily never missed a practice or game while arrangements for her father\’s funeral were being finalized.  But Emily\’s friends gathered to support their teammate at the opening game in Salem only two days before the funeral

Tonight the coach\’s and players showed what the true meaning of Family is. In true meaning of Gloucester Spirit these player put the Keith Family ahead of a game to honor Emily\’s dad, that in some way helped everyone understand there is more to life then just a GAME.

Past Mt. Laurel Day Care Director Indicted for Taking $64,544 from Employer

Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina announced that a 31-year-old Clementon woman was indicted today for stealing nearly $65,000 from a Mount Laurel day care

center where she was employed as the director.

Ashley Offenbacker, (photo) of the 300 block of White Horse Pike, was indicted by a grand jury on one count of Theft by Failure to Make Disposition (Second Degree). The indictment was returned today and signed by Prosecutor Coffina. An arraignment will be scheduled soon in Superior Court.

The investigation revealed that Offenbacker, who was responsible for enrollment and billing at Kiddie Academy, instructed several parents to submit tuition payments to her in cash instead of utilizing the business’s online billing system.

She is accused of taking $64,544 from 14 families between November 2017 and January 2019.

The case was presented to the grand jury by Assistant Prosecutor Melissa O’Mara. The investigation was conducted by the Mount Laurel Police Department. The lead investigator was Mount Laurel Police Detective Thomas Corsanico.

An indictment is merely an accusation. Defendants are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty.

OFFICER DOWN: Public Safety Officer Jackson Ryan Winkeler, Shot and Killed During Traffic Stop

FLORENCE COUNTY, SC–Public Safety Officer Jackson Winkeler, age 26, was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop on Gilbert Avenue near the airport\’s

terminal shortly before 6:00 am.

The man opened fire on Officer Winkeler during the stop. Over 30 shots were exchanged during the ensuing shootout. The man then stole Officer Winkeler\’s service weapon and fled the scene. He was arrested a short time later by members of the Florence County Sheriff\’s Office.

Officer Winkeler also served as a volunteer firefighter with the Latta Fire Department. He is survived predeceased by one brother and is by his parents and sisters.

Camden County GOP Chairman: “No One Forced Duvall Out Of The Primary”

HADDON HEIGHTS – Camden County Republican Chairman Rich Ambrosino addressed some concerns after learning Josh Duvall has dropped out of the CD1 GOP primary

election.

“Yesterday I learned Josh Duvall has dropped out of the Republican primary election for Congress in CD1. Just like when he announced he was running, he didn’t bother calling any county chairs and simply issued a press release,” Ambrosino said. “I have a serious issue with him implying that he was forced out of the race.”

“No one tried to force Josh Duvall out of the primary.” Ambrosino explained, “Frankly, it was the other way around. Duvall and his supporters felt he shouldn’t be challenged because he announced early. I had to explain that isn’t how it works and everyone appears before our screening committee to determine who gets the organization’s endorsement.”

“Gloucester County GOP Chairwoman Jacci Vigilante and I went the extra mile to encourage Josh.” Ambrosino continued, “We met with Josh after Burlington County endorsed Claire Gustafson and encouraged him to stay in the race and appear before our screening committees. Obviously, he chose not to do that.”

“I’m not sure why Duvall felt the need to attack the party on his way out of the race,” Ambrosino said. “He clearly doesn’t understand primary elections are ‘purity tests’ and he doesn’t understand this party is solidly behind President Trump. Duvall also doesn’t understand our county party has been growing over the past couple of years and I’m sorry he doesn’t want to be part of that growth, but that’s his choice.”
