Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) has awarded the Lawnside Historical Society a $50,000 unrestricted grant.

The award stems from a collaboration with Q&A Thought Partners and others during a May convening of experts in Lawnside as part of RWJF’s ongoing exploration into how homeownership preservation, community continuity, and equitable investment strategies intersect with health and long-term wellbeing. Q&A Thought Partners is led by H. Qawi and Angela Austin of Lawnside.

Society members Shamele Jordon, Christine Lewis-Coker, Linda Shockley and Veronica Tingle provided historical perspective and guided a tour of the historic community during the convening.

Man Charged With Stabbing Siblings

An East Hempfield Township man has been charged with stabbing his sister to death and injuring his brother during a bloody knife attack in his home Monday morning. Bryan Emeric Adolph, 26, was charged with criminal homicide, two counts of aggravated assault and a single count of possessing an instrument of crime. Adolph is accused of stabbing his 28-year-old sister Elyse Adolph to death inside his residence in the 1100 block of Persimmon Drive shortly after 10:30 a.m. 

Police found Elyse dead in a pool of blood inside the residence when they arrived. Another victim, Adolph’s 24-year-old brother, told police Adolph had stabbed him and Elyse inside the residence before he armed himself with a handgun in self-defense. Adolph’s brother, who had numerous visible puncture wounds to his arms and was bleeding heavily, was taken to an area hospital to be treated for his injuries and remains there as he recovers.  In an interview with police Adolph said he became angry when the victims’ dogs were continuously barking. At one point Adolph grabbed and punched one of the dogs in the nose, he said.  Elyse witnessed Adolph striking the dog and confronted him, he told police.

The ALS Center at Hackensack University Medical Center has been awarded the prestigious designation of an ALS Association Certified Treatment Center of Excellence™, marking a major milestone for the care of individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in the region. The certification recognizes the program’s commitment to providing outstanding, multidisciplinary care and its dedication to advancing research in the fight against this devastating disease.

ALS, often called Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to a loss of muscle control. When Tariffs Hurt More Than Help

The U.S. government has collected roughly $340 billion in import duties since President Trump announced his Liberation Day tariffs over a year ago. And the economic impact has been more complex than either the supporters, or the critics, want to admit.

But as critics have noted, tariffs are essentially sales taxes on imports — which inevitably means higher costs for Americans who buy those products. Two-thirds of Americans feel that tariffs have increased their personal cost of living.

Washington could minimize this financial burden — while still incentivizing reshoring — by making the tariff regime more targeted and flexible. In particular, it doesn’t make sense to impose tariffs on imported goods that, by definition, cannot be made in America.

Ruth Elbradey, 69, of Deptford

On July 18th, 2026, Ruth Elbradey (née Fager) returned home to the Lord. Born on July 9th, 1957, to Donald Fager Sr. and Ruth Armenia (née Carr) in Camden, NJ, Ruth is remembered for her courage, intelligence, and absolute love for her family. She is survived by her brother Charles Fager Sr. (Elisabeth), her daughter, Sarah Elbradey, grandsons Mohamed and Ahmed Osman, and her nephews as well as cousins. She was predeceased by her mother Ruth Armenia, her father Donald Fager Sr., and her brother Donald Fager II (Sheri).

Ruth will always be remembered for her love of true crime, good books, music, ceramics and Jeopardy. She will be loved and missed by all who knew her.

Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later time.

Potential Witness Attempt to Identify

The Philadelphia Police Department’s Crash Investigation Division is requesting the public’s assistance in identifying and locating the female depicted in the above photo. Investigators believe she may possess vital information that could assist in the ongoing investigation of a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred at the intersection of Kelly Drive and Reservoir Drive on June 24, 2026, at approximately 11:05 p.m. Anyone with information regarding the identity of this individual, or who has any additional details concerning the incident, is urged to contact the Crash Investigation Division immediately at 215-685-3180.

Mary Ellen Devlin, 91, of Bellmawr

Mary Ellen Devlin (nee Flick) passed away on July 20, 2026.  A resident of Bellmawr, NJ she was 91 years old.

Daughter of the late Charles and Mary Flick.  Beloved wife of the late William J. Devlin, Sr. and the late Paul M. Governa.  Loving mother of Devi Hibbard, William J. Devlin, Jr. (Carla), Charles Devlin (Susan Heidke), Joseph Devlin (Erika), James Devlin (Betty) and Christopher Governa (Jennifer).  She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Family meant everything to Mary Ellen, and nothing was more special than time spent with her grandchildren.  She was very proud of her Polish heritage, enjoyed trips to the casinos and was an avid story teller.

Funeral service and interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Bucks County Deputy Sheriff Charged with taking Photos of Naked Prisons

(July 21, 2026)–A Bucks County Deputy Sheriff was formally charged on Monday with secretly photographing naked prisoners while in custody, disseminating those images to co-workers and personal contacts, and then lying to investigators in an attempt to cover up his actions, Bucks County District Attorney Joe Khan announced on Monday.  Ryan Gaffney, who was terminated from the Sheriff’s Office last month, was charged Monday morning with official oppression, unsworn falsification to authorities, possessing an instrument of crime, and obstructing the administration of law or other government function.

The charges were filed via summons, and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for Aug. 10. The criminal charges stem from an investigation launched by the Bucks County Detectives on March 31, 2026, after receiving a referral from the Bucks County Sheriff’s Office, which commenced a concurrent internal affairs investigation following a complaint regarding Deputy Gaffney’s on-duty conduct.  According to the affidavit of probable cause, on January 30, 2026, Gaffney and four other uniformed deputies executed an arrest warrant for an adult male at his residence in Middletown Township. The male was suffering from a mental health crisis and was located upstairs in a bedroom, naked from the waist down.

Grand Jury Finds NJ State Police Detective Acted in Self-Defense

TRENTON — A state grand jury has voted not to file any criminal charges against a New Jersey State Police (NJSP) detective at the conclusion of its deliberations regarding a death on July 29, 2025 that occurred during an encounter with NJSP detectives assigned to the U.S. Marshals Service NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force. The decedent was previously identified as Shawn Phillips, 37, of West Berlin, New Jersey.
