LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Damn Local Politics

I shall continue to voice my opinions until the day I stop breathing. For many years I have been involved in our community. First as a Concern Citizen then as your Mayor. I am presently very concerned with the direction our beloved city is heading.

There are more businesses leaving out town than there are coming into Gloucester City. Over the last several years, we have gone from a proud hard-working, blue-collar, middle-income community to a none-working low income town.

Who can we blame for this?

Preserving Jewish Heritage at the Jersey Shore – Beth Judah Celebrates

Beth Judah Synagogue in Wildwood, N.J., held a centennial celebration recognizing the congregation’s addition to the National Register of Historic Places and highlighting its role in American Jewish history. Descendants of the synagogue’s founders, including Heather Hornstein Goodman, Louis Sagal and Ruth Edelman, were recognized during the event. Speakers emphasized Beth Judah’s resilience and lasting impact on the community, noting its significance in both Jewish and American history. Among those offering remarks were New Jersey State Senator Michael Testa Jr. and Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano Jr., who praised the congregation’s efforts to preserve an important piece of local cultural heritage.

Camden Man Convicted of Years-Long Sexual Abuse of Two Children

A jury has convicted a Camden man for sexually abusing two children over the course of nearly a decade, announced Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay. Miguel A. Mota, 41, was found guilty on July 21, 2026, of four counts of first-degree Aggravated Sexual Assault.
He was also convicted of three counts of second-degree Sexual Assault, three counts of second-degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child, two counts of third-degree Aggravated Sexual Contact, one count of third-degree Terroristic Threats, and one count of fourth-degree Criminal Sexual Contact. The verdict was returned after a four-week jury trial in Camden County Superior Court.

DNREC Seeks Volunteers for 2026 Delaware Coastal Cleanup

Volunteer registration is now open for the 39^th annual Delaware Coastal Cleanup, set for Saturday, Sept. 19, at more than 40 sites statewide. Hosted by the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, this popular annual event welcomes participants who turn out to help maintain the state’s beaches, coastline and waterways from 9 a.m. to noon. Individuals as well as groups can sign up at the de.gov/coastalcleanup webpage now through Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 4:30 p.m.

Each year, the Delaware Coastal Cleanup draws hundreds of volunteers who collect litter, debris and recyclables from shorelines and natural areas. The event directly supports DNREC’s mission to provide quality outdoor recreation experiences while protecting public health and the environment.

HUD Joins the NFL and Agency Partners to Support Engaging Youth Through Sport

Officials from Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Health and Human Services (HHS), Education (ED), and Labor (DOL) today joined Troy Vincent Sr., Executive Vice President of National Football League (NFL) Football Operations to announce a federal agency Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) focused on youth engagement through sport.

Shooting Investigation

The Philadelphia Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred this morning in the city’s 25th District.

At approximately 9:29 a.m., officers responded to reports of gunfire on the highway along the 2800 block of North Reese Street. Upon arrival, police located an adult male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Responding officers immediately transported the victim to Temple University Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

Officers secured the scene, recovered a firearm, and has a suspect into custody. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under active investigation with the Shooting Investigation Group.

Suspect for Shooting Incident in the 8th District

The Philadelphia Police Department is seeking the public’s help in identifying the suspect in this video:

On July 4,2026 at approximately 5:15am two males became involved in an argument while playing the “skill machines” inside the location. During the dispute, one male produced a black handgun and fired at the victim missing him. The offender fled the scene in a GMC SUV before police arrived.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) has awarded the Lawnside Historical Society a $50,000 unrestricted grant.

The award stems from a collaboration with Q&A Thought Partners and others during a May convening of experts in Lawnside as part of RWJF’s ongoing exploration into how homeownership preservation, community continuity, and equitable investment strategies intersect with health and long-term wellbeing. Q&A Thought Partners is led by H. Qawi and Angela Austin of Lawnside.

Society members Shamele Jordon, Christine Lewis-Coker, Linda Shockley and Veronica Tingle provided historical perspective and guided a tour of the historic community during the convening.
