The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced the grant application period for the Fiscal Year 2027 Airport Improvement Program (AIP) is open with applications being accepted from now through October 9, 2026.
The New Jersey Airport Improvement Program provides $4 million annually for projects that improve New
Jersey’s public use general aviation airports and aviation transportation system. AIP grants, administered by the NJDOT Division of Local Aid, are awarded through a competitive process, with an emphasis on projects designed to enhance safety, remove obstructions, rehabilitate existing facilities and equipment, and make capital improvements.
In the last five years, the New Jersey Department of Transportation has invested more than $31.7 million in New Jersey’s general aviation airports to date, leveraging an additional $38.1 million in federal grants and $5.2 million from airport owners, for a total of $75 million to support New Jersey’s General Aviation Airports and aeronautics infrastructure.
Grants awarded under the AIP may provide up to 90 percent of the funding for the total eligible project costs. An applicant can submit a maximum of two applications per fiscal year. Application proposals are accepted through SAGE, the State’s on-line System for Administering Grants Electronically.
NJDOT also continues to accept applications for Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) matching grants, where NJDOT may provide up to half of the local match for eligible costs required by the FAA. The FAA currently provides up to 95 percent of project funding and requires the recipient airport to provide the remaining amount.
