THE CLEARYS OF CAMDEN
201:JAMES FRANCIS CLEARY, (John200, James1) was born on February 10, 1863, in Camden, New Jersey.. (1863-1924); He died August 13, 1924, at 555 Pine Street in Camden, New Jersey of organic heart disease. James was interred on August 18, 1924, at Calvary Cemetery in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. The directories of Camden list him at various addresses between 1883 and 1892 near Pine Street, where his parents lived. After the death of his mother, Mary, he was left with lifetime tenancy in a house at 705 South Sixth Street. His occupation changed from laborer to collector to driver for Burnett and Betts, then to work in “wine and liquors” in 1892. From 1893 through 1897, he appears to have been in business for himself with a partner named Corbett. From 1898 through 1905, he lived at 225 Pine Street and was listed as a “bottler.”
His niece, Agnes (Cleary) Weatherby, remembers that he had a ‘soda fountain’ during the early 1920s. A news account in the Camden Daily Courier on Thursday, August 14, 1924, under the headline JAMES CLEARY DIES SUDDENLY, SOUTH CAMDEN MAN DROPS DEAD WHILE SERVING MAN IN STORE,
reads as follows:
“James Cleary, age 65, 555 Pine Street, widely known resident of South Camden, fell dead of heart disease last night in the candy store in the rear of his home, while waiting on a customer. The dead man had complained of ill health for several days; he had insisted on going to his work in the tool shop of the New York Ship Building Corporation where he had been employed for many years. Cleary was alone in the store adjoining the stage entrance of the Towers Theatre when he fell unconscious behind the counter shortly after ten o’clock. His two sons, James and John, and a daughter-in-law were in the theater watching the performance of “Made in Camden” when the show stopped for an announcement that their father had suddenly fallen ill.
They hurried home but were too late. Cleary was stricken while handing an ice cream cone to a six-year-old performer in the musical comedy review, Master Jack Tory. Frank McCullough, 525 Lime Street, who was also in the store, called Patrolman Charles Naylor and the two attempted to resuscitate Cleary. Coroner Pratt pronounced death due to heart disease. The deceased was a brother of William Cleary, County Detective, and an active member of the Camden Aerie of Eagles. His wife, Mrs. Georgianna Cleary, who was spending several weeks at their summer home in Wildwood, was immediately notified, and arrived home this morning.” The next day the obituary indicated that he was a member of the Holy Name Society, the Camden Aerie No. 65, F. O. E. and the Welcome Circle No. 3, B. of A. He was buried at his home with a Solemn Requiem Mass at 9 o’clock at the Church of the Immaculate Conception on August 18, 1924.

Fitzsimmons performed the ceremony. James was living at home with his parents at 229 Pine Street and was a “collector.” At the time of the marriage, Georgiana lived at 8 Parry Street in Camden. (Georgiana apparently had a sister named Daisy, a schoolteacher in Camden who lived with her mother; she also had a sister, Nan, who married Tom Weaver and had an adopted daughter, Adelaide.) Georgiana died on December 7, 1928. The death certificate lists bronchial pneumonia as the cause of death, but the obituary published in the Evening Courier Post on December 8, 1928, states that “she died of shock suffered when . . . [her] son, George, 42, died two weeks ago.” At the time of her death at age 63, she was living at 555 Pine Street. Her funeral Mass was at 10 o’clock at Immaculate Conception Church.
