DOVER (Aug. 31, 2015) – As the summer season slowly fades and an autumn chill returns to the air in Delaware, thousands of migrating raptors will travel south over the state on their way to warmer winter climes. Each fall, raptor enthusiasts rejoice as they flock to the First State’s two established raptor migration monitoring sites, or hawk watches, to observe and count these hawks, falcons, eagles, ospreys, and vultures as they pass by.

 TRENTON – Wildlife experts with the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife this morning successfully removed an arrow that has been protruding from the muzzle of a female deer that has been seen frequently in the Marlboro area since last winter.

The wildlife experts, Kim Tinnes, Joseph Burke, and George Garbaravage, were able to attract the deer using corn placed at a private property off Suffolk Way in Marlboro. They tranquilized her with a dart gun. 

The wildlife experts snipped off the shaft but, upon the recommendation of a veterinarian on scene, left the arrowhead in place. The wound had healed around the arrowhead and trying to remove it could cause further injury, the veterinarian, an experienced wildlife rehabilitator, determined.

When athletes take small doses of synthetic hormones, the window during which they might fail a test is very short — often just hours. So it’s critical that athletes don’t know when the tests will occur. To facilitate year-round, unannounced testing of a limited number of top athletes, the World Anti-Doping Agency calls for \”whereabouts requirements.\” Beginning in 2009, potential Olympians had to fill out forms letting anti-doping authorities know where they would be for at least one hour each day — between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. — for the next few months. (An athlete’s whereabouts calendar can be altered, and the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency even has a mobile whereabouts app.) Still, athletes can miss three tests in 12 months before they face a sanction. It’s only fair to give some wiggle room — any idea where you’ll be three Tuesdays from now? — but it means athletes can sometimes avoid the testers by claiming to have stepped out briefly or that they didn’t hear the doorbell. Or, as retired professional cyclist Tyler Hamilton — and admitted former doper — once succinctly summarized a low-tech method of chicanery: \”We hid.\”

At approximately 8:00am, Lieutenant Gliniewicz radioed his dispatcher that he was stopping to investigate three suspicious males that he observed near Route 12 and Sayton Road in Fox Lake. Shortly thereafter, he radioed in a foot pursuit. When backup officers arrived, the found Lieutenant mortally wounded. They also discovered that items were missing from his duty belt, including his firearm.

(August 28, 2015) – The Camden County Health Department has been notified by the New Jersey Department of Health and Human Services (NJDHSS) that a skunk removed from a Berlin Township yard has tested positive for rabies.

On July 24, a skunk entered the yard of a Berlin Township home and made contact with the family dog. The Animal Control Officer for the municipality picked up the skunk and arranged for rabies testing at the state Public Health & Environmental Laboratories in Trenton (PHEL). There are no known human exposures to this skunk.

On Aug. 27, the Camden County Health Department was notified by PHEL that the animal was rabid. The dog is current with its rabies vaccination and received a rabies booster shot on Aug. 25. In addition, state regulations dictate that the dog be confined and observed for 45 days from the date of the incident. The NJDHSS has not provided the name or address of the family.
