The rankings released today, mark a significant rise from last year’s #7 ranking and reinforce Cooper’s University Health Care’s position as one of the state’s leading academic health systems. Cooper was also ranked #8 among the top hospitals in the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

Gregory Heisler, 56, Formerly of Gloucester City

On July 23, 2026 at the age of 56, Greg passed suddenly at Jefferson Hospital in Cherry Hill. Of Cinnaminson. Formerly of Gloucester City.

Predeceased by his parents, James E. Heisler and Helen C. Heisler (nee Geoghegan), brother, Edward Heisler; step-sister Angel Heisler and step-brother Jimmy Heisler.

Survived by his longtime partner, Jenna; children, Raine and Brandon Heisler; brothers, Michael Heisler and John Heisler; step-sisters Jane Heisler and Susan Heisler.

Greg will be remembered for his big heart, generous spirit, and wonderful sense of humor. A devoted sports fan, he rarely missed cheering on his beloved Eagles and Flyers. He had an appreciation of all music, but a deep love for rock and metal.

More than anything, Greg loved his family. Raine and Brandon meant the world to him, and he treasured every moment he spent with them. He had a gift for telling goofy jokes and loved making people laugh—even if he was the one laughing the hardest.

Greg was also incredibly thoughtful. He never forgot an anniversary, birthday, Mother’s Day, or Valentine’s Day. Whether it was flowers, chocolates, a special dinner, or a small surprise, he found countless ways to make Jenna feel loved and appreciated. His kindness, thoughtfulness, and unwavering love will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those who knew him.

Mary E. Chandler, 89, Formerly of Audubon

Mary Elizabeth Chandler (nee McGrory) passed away peacefully on July 22, 2026, at the age of 89.

Mary was born in Darby, Pennsylvania, on September 6, 1936, to the late Francis A. and Genevieve E. (nee Malloy) McGrory. The family crossed the bridge and became “the Jersey McGrorys,” and Mary grew up in Audubon with her big brother Frank, “Irish twin” Patsy and little sister Kathleen, as well as Aunts Ann and Marie. She attended St. Rose of Lima grammar school in Haddon Heights and later Camden Catholic High School.

During high school Mary met the love of her life, Roy Chandler, and they were married in 1957. They made their home in Pennsauken, N.J., where they welcomed their son, Michael, in 1964.

Over the years Mary worked at Bell Telephone as a phone switch operator, in the women’s clothing department at Strawbridge & Clothier in Cherry Hill, NJ, and the gift shop at Virtua Hospital in Marlton, NJ. Her final home was Spring Hills in Cherry Hill.

Mary was an honest, caring and strong woman with a sharp wit who enjoyed bird watching, caring for plants and going for scenic drives in Roy’s convertible. Her happiest moments were those spent with family, especially weeks at the Jersey shore or trips to Newport, Rhode Island.

DNREC Announces Year’s First Detection of West Nile Virus

No Human Cases of WNV Reported in 2026 in State; Equine Owners Urged to Vaccinate Their Animals

West Nile Virus (WNV) has been detected in Delaware for the first time in 2026 in the sentinel chickens that help the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control monitor the state for mosquito-borne illnesses.

The DNREC Mosquito Control Section reported its first WNV detection from a sentinel chicken flock location in eastern Kent County that was sampled July 20, with virus-positive confirmation of the chicken coming on July 31 from the Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH) laboratory.

“This occurrence is slightly earlier than our typical first detection date, historically the last week in July or first week in August – but is consistent with other WNV activity thus far this summer elsewhere in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast,” DNREC Mosquito Control Section Administrator Tom Moran said.

Mary Lou Burkhardt, 78, formerly of Gloucester City

Surrounded by her loving family, Mary Lou Burkhardt, passed away peacefully at Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill on August 3, 2026, at the age of 78. Of Mullica Hill. Formerly a longtime resident of Gloucester City.

Beloved daughter of the late Bernard J. Murray and Louise Garavaglia Murray. Mary Lou is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 56 years, Kenneth A. Burkhardt; her children, Stephen Burkhardt (Dawn), Denise Burkhardt, Patrick Burkhardt (Nicole) and Daniel Burkhardt (Meghan); grandchildren, James, Andrew and Kyle Burkhardt, Emily and Samantha Kulpa, Charlie and Grace Burkhardt and Eve Burkhardt; her brother and sister-in-law, James and Ellen Murray. In addition to her parents, Mary Lou was predeceased by her brother, Dennis P. Murray.

Mary Lou was a proud graduate of Gloucester Catholic High School, Class of 1966. She continued her education by earning her nursing degree from Thomas Jefferson in Philadelphia, embarking on a career devoted to caring for others. Mary Lou was a registered nurse for many years at West Jersey Hospital in Camden.

An avid reader, Mary Lou found joy in books and was always eager to learn. She was a longtime faithful parishioner of St. Mary’s Church in Gloucester City, where her faith was a guiding presence throughout her life. Above all, Mary Lou was devoted to her family, whose love and well-being were the center of her life. She will be remembered for her compassion, kindness, unwavering faith, and the deep love she shared with those closest to her.

Annual Hurricane Evacuation Exercise Tomorrow

No roads will be closed; however, motorists should expect an increased police and work crew presence on key shore routes

(Trenton) – New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials, in partnership with the New Jersey State Police (NJSP), the New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA), the South Jersey Transportation Authority (SJTA), and the New Jersey Department of Corrections (NJDOC) announced today that it will be conducting its annual emergency evacuation exercise on Thursday, August 6 to practice and refine response activities in the event of a major hurricane.
