DNREC Reminds Residents and Visitors Delaware’s Open Burning Ban Begins May 1

The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control reminds residents and visitors to the First State that Delaware’s annual open burning ban takes effect Thursday, May 1 and continues through Sept. 30 and is in place to help protect air quality during what’s also known as the ozone season.

During the statewide ban, most outdoor burning is not allowed. Cooking fires, recreational campfires and ceremonial bonfires are still permitted year-round when they use firewood, charcoal, propane, or natural gas.

DNREC, DPH Call for Heightened Tick Awareness

As Delawareans spend more time outdoors this spring and summer, the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) and the Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) Division of Public Health (DPH) are reminding residents to take simple steps to avoid tick bites and reduce the risk of tick-borne illness. Ticks are active in Delaware year-round, not just in warmer months, and can be found in wooded, brushy and grassy areas.

Camden County Roadwork Projects

Several roadway projects will be underway across Camden County during the week of April 27 to May 1.

“Motorists should plan ahead to take alternate routes and give themselves plenty of time to get to their destinations,” said Commissioner Al Dyer, liaison to the Department of Public Works. “Also, remember that when you’re traveling through a construction area, please slow down and stay alert for crew members and debris.”

Traffic Advisory For This Week

The I-676 southbound Exit 1B to Collings Avenue/Collingswood is scheduled to be closed and detoured overnight for an additional two weeks as a bridge replacement and paving project advances in Camden and Gloucester City, Camden County. In addition, the Collings Road ramp to I-676 southbound is also scheduled to be closed overnight.

Rabid Bat Confirmed in Haddonfield

The Camden County Department of Health and Human Services has been notified by the New Jersey Department of Health that a bat found in Haddonfield has tested positive for rabies.

On April 18, a bat was found in a Haddonfield resident’s attic. The residents were able to safely contain and remove the bat from the home. Animal control removed the bat from the premises and arranged for rabies testing at the state Public Health & Environmental Laboratories (PHEL) in Trenton. On April 24, the Camden County Department of Health and Human Services was notified by PHEL that the animal was rabid. There were no human exposures. Three cats were exposed to the bat.

The residents and animal control have been notified. The Camden County Department of Health and Human Services received proof of vaccination for the cats, and all three received the rabies vaccine booster. The cats will be under confinement and observation for 45 days.

Theft Of A Wallet At The Blackwood Clementon Sunoco Store, April 17, 2026

The pictured suspect was waiting in line at the Sunoco Store’s register when the victim in front of him finished a purchase and dropped their wallet while exiting the store. The suspect then made a purchase, turned to exit, and observed the wallet on the floor. The suspect then picked up the wallet and immediately concealed it into his pants pocket while exiting the store and walking to his dark colored Honda with no front registration tag and Pennsylvania inspection stickers on the windshield.

Wildwood Sets Overnight Boardwalk Hours

On Wednesday, April 8, 2026, The City of Wildwood introduced upon first reading Ordinance No. 1350-26, amending the City’s General Ordinances to establish Boardwalk operating hours. Upon adoption, the Boardwalk will be closed for public use during the hours of 1:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m., year-round. No person shall remain on the Boardwalk during such hours.
