NJ Coalition for Free Speech Celebrates the Defeat of the Controversial IHRA Antisemitism Bill

The NJ Coalition for Free Speech today welcomes the decision of State Assembly and Senate Leadership not to advance the harmful IHRA Antisemitism Bill (A3558/S1292) in the New Jersey State Legislature, marking a significant victory for free speech, academic freedom, civil liberties, and democratic values. The lack of support for the IHRA bill, as reflected in public statements by elected officials, demonstrates the strength of a broad, principled coalition of Palestinian, Muslim, Jewish, Christian, K–12 and higher education, labor union, and civil rights organizations, advocates, and community members who came together to oppose legislation that would have threatened constitutionally protected speech and political expression.

This diverse coalition stood united in the belief that combating antisemitism must never come at the expense of free speech or the silencing of legitimate criticism of government policy. Members of the coalition consistently warned that the IHRA bill, as drafted, risked conflating criticism of the Israeli government with antisemitism, chilling speech, and disproportionately harming Muslim, Palestinian, Arab, and Jewish advocates for human rights.

“The defeat of the IHRA bill is a testament to the power of principled coalitional organizing,” said Ali Aljarrah, State Lead for CAIR Action NJ. “Our diverse coalition proved that fighting hate and protecting free speech are not competing values, but inseparable ones.”

“Combating antisemitism and protecting civil liberties are interconnected goals that safeguard all communities. This objective is poorly served by legislation that misrepresents human rights advocacy as hate speech,” said Haliema Twam, Civic Engagement and Advocacy Manager at the Palestinian American Community Center

“Despite being framed by some media outlets as primarily a Jewish versus Muslim issue, that is not true.  Many Jewish organizations and individuals represented by our free speech coalition reject the weaponization of antisemitism and affirm that protecting the safety and dignity of those of us who identify as Jewish but deny any connection to the Israeli state goes hand-in-hand with defending free expression,” said Renée Steinhagen, a member of Jewish Voice for Peace-Northern New Jersey. “As Louis Brandeis, the first Jewish Supreme Court Justice, said, we need ‘more speech, not forced silence.’”

“The rejection of IHRA is a foundation to build on as we continue confronting attempts to silence communities of conscious, criminalize advocacy for justice in Palestine, and normalize policies that enable genocide,” said Hafsa Habehh, American Muslims for Palestine – NJ Chapter. “The long-term efforts to institutionalize the IHRA definition now face organized opposition.”

“Our office has been fighting variations of this definition for over six years. We’re glad our legislators have chosen to uphold free speech once again.” said Selaedin Maksut, Executive Director for CAIR-NJ. “While this bill is now dead for this session, we remain vigilant and call on our elected officials to continue opposing it should it be reintroduced in the future.”

“Resistencia en Acción is relieved that the IHRA definition of antisemitism did not pass in the legislature. This definition can be used to suppress political speech and further criminalize immigrant communities, including through ICE and other enforcement systems—as was done to a New Jersey resident, Leqaa Kordia,” said Ana Paola, Executive Director of Resistencia en Acción NJ.

Throughout the legislative process, including three Assembly committee hearings and one multi-day Senate committee hearing, each lasting for several hours, the advocates testifying in opposition to the IHRA bill appreciated that their voices were heard.

“The State of New Jersey has shown that it can simultaneously protect civil rights and uphold free speech,” said Dr. Heather Pierce, political science professor and president of the Rutgers Adjunct Faculty Union. “We urge our elected leaders to build on this moment by listening to impacted communities, engaging in genuine dialogue, and rejecting the false dichotomy between combating antisemitism and defending democratic values.”

The coalition now calls on New Jersey’s elected officials, including incoming Governor Mikie Sherrill, to stand on the right side of history by rejecting legislative efforts that erode First Amendment protections. Elected leaders must instead pursue policies that address hate and discrimination through education, community investment, and enforcement of existing civil rights laws, without compromising constitutional freedoms.

Dems demand investigation of fatal Minneapolis ICE shooting as Trump claims self-defense

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump defended a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer who fatally shot a woman in Minneapolis Wednesday, while congressional Democrats universally condemned the action.

Video obtained by the Minnesota Reformer shows an ICE officer demanding the driver of a maroon SUV get out of the vehicle. As the vehicle begins to pull away, an officer fires three shots through the windshield and driver-side window. The video shows no apparent harm to the officer, who walked away from the vehicle shortly after the shooting.

But Trump wrote on social media that “it is hard to believe he is alive.”

“The woman driving the car was very disorderly, obstructing and resisting, who then violently, willfully, and viciously ran over the ICE Officer, who seems to have shot her in self defense,” Trump wrote.

Minnesota’s Democratic congressional delegation, and other Democrats in Washington, D.C., strongly condemned the incident and questioned the subsequent comments from the administration.

“We need full transparency and an investigation of what happened, and I am deeply concerned that statements made by DHS do not appear to reflect video evidence and on-the-ground accounts,” Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar, the state’s senior senator, said in a statement.

statement from several Minneapolis City Council members identified the victim as Renee Nicole Good, 37. A photo of the SUV shows several stuffed animals hanging out of the glove compartment.

Big Wins for American Families as Gas Prices, Mortgage Rates Plummet

As 2026 begins, President Donald J. Trump’s America First agenda is making more progress delivering real, tangible relief to American families, with gas prices falling to their lowest levels in five years and mortgage rates dropping sharply. These declines — driven by the Trump Administration’s relentless pursuit of energy dominance and housing affordability — are putting money back in Americans’ pockets and making the American Dream more attainable than ever.

Gas drops its lowest price in years — again.

Gas prices have hit their lowest levels since 2021, with the national average declining for the seventh straight week. According to GasBuddy, the average price for regular gas is below $3 per gallon in 43 states, below $2.75 per gallon in 30 states, and at or below $2.50 per gallon in 17 states. In fact, Americans can even find gas below $2 per gallon at certain stations in at least 19 states.

This relief is putting real money back in Americans’ pockets: motorists are on track to spend $11 billion less on gas in 2026 compared to 2025, with the average household saving hundreds annually and overall gas spending as a share of disposable income reaching the lowest in two decades.

THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY:

What the Hell is Happening NOW?

In 2015 The Obama administration passed a law pertaining to illegal immigrant minors.  They have to be read their rights (a minor immigrant understands his rights?)  The law goes on to detail their rights as food, clothing, and shelter and a ton of other rights the average citizen doesn’t have.  Last year, 2021, The Biden Administration updated the law.  Read the next sentence very carefully!  The update specified that the government had to supply illegal immigrant children with “baby formula and milk.”  The Washington Post wrote the article with a “see, there’s no problem – we’re just following the law.”

ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS RECEIVE GOLD STAR BENEFITS-Families in the United States are struggling to find formula for their babies. And, when they do find it the prices are astronomical.

________________________________

GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ (May 15, 2022)–Just about everyone knows that there is a baby formula shortage.  Many of you are experiencing it.  What is happening?  This is America and every day we look more like a third-world country rather than the richest and most powerful nation in the world.

Images-3

So, what is the story behind the story with the formula shortage?  Let’s start with a few facts.  The United States makes 98% of the formula we use.  This is a good thing; it keeps jobs in America and we have much more control over the quality and distribution of the product.  The majority of formula is used by WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) recipients.  The federal government has a contract with Abbott Company to supply the formula for WIC and SNAP (formerly food stamps) administrated through the states.  The states give a “discount” to Abbott et al. up to 85%  This is very profitable for Abbott and the federal and state governments don’t really care because it is “We, the People” who pay for it.

Each year between and four babies are reported with infections from a bacteria called cronobacter sakazakii. Never before has a plant been closed.  The closest I was able to find for the number of babies who became ill this year was four.  Two babies recovered and two died.  So, at some point the government closed the plant for inspection.  This was the right thing to do. However, I could only come to an inspection date between January 31, 2022 and March 18, 2022.  What was the time span between the disclosure of the problem, the decision to close the Michigan plant, the inspection and conclusion?  We don’t know.

At the point it was determined to close the plant there should have also been a plan for an alternate source of formula.  There are other U.S. based companies; but there is no evidence that this was done.  We have to be more careful than usual because these are our babies, not IPhones or clothes, etc.  In the past it was found that the Chinese were putting melamine into their formula.  We grey hairs remember unbreakable dinnerware called Melmac which was taken off the market because it caused…yes, cancer.  Where we get the replacement formula is essential but did anyone look right here in America?

According to the Washington Examiner, May 13, 2022 the inspection is complete, the results are in but the Food and Drug Administration won’t specify the exact criteria for full approval to re-open Abbott’s Michigan plant.  The inspection found some of the bacteria but none in the processing area.  Samples of the formula were completely free of the bacteria.  Everything sounds good.

Bacteria, like humans and all other living things, has its own DNA.  Scientists were able to determine that the bacterial DNA in the babies did not come from the closed plant.  So why hasn’t the FDA provided a date or even criteria for a full opening?

This is where you have to take off your scientist’s hat and put on your lawyer’s hat.  On May 12, 2022 the Washington Post issued a headline about the “faux outrage” over this supposed problem.  The term “faux outrage” is outrageous in itself but the article went on to say there is no real formula shortage.  “They” were just following the law.  Fortunately, The Post printed excerpts from the law.  In my opinion, for what that’s worth, it all has to do with politics and money.  Here’s what happened:

In 2015 The Obama administration passed a law pertaining to illegal immigrant minors.  They have to be read their rights (a minor immigrant understands his rights?)  The law goes on to detail their rights as food, clothing, and shelter and a ton of other rights the average citizen doesn’t have.  Last year, 2021, The Biden Administration updated the law.  Read the next sentence very carefully!  The update specified that the government had to supply illegal immigrant children with “baby formula and milk.”  The Washington Post wrote the article with a “see, there’s no problem – we’re just following the law.”

President Biden can solve the problem with the stroke of a pen.  I am usually against Executive Orders.  I feel Presidents use them to make law that would normally not get through Congress.  In this case I am exasperated that President hasn’t already signed an executive order to alter the “formula or milk for illegal babies” to “Give the illegals formula or milk after all the citizen and legal resident babies have been fed.”

New Jersey Designates July 30th as Brian Sicknick Day

Newly signed legislation honors South River native and fallen U.S. Capitol Police officer

Governor Phil Murphy signed Assembly Joint Resolution 215 (AJR215) into law, formally designating July 30 of each year as Brian Sicknick Day in New Jersey. Sponsored by Assemblymen Robert Karabinchak and Sterley Stanley, the legislation honors Brian Sicknick, a South River native who served in the New Jersey Air National Guard and spent more than 12 years with the United States Capitol Police, including service in the First Responder’s Unit.

According to the U.S. Capitol Police, Officer Sicknick responded to the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, where he was assaulted while defending Congress. He later suffered two strokes and died the following night.

“Designating Brian Sicknick Day ensures that New Jersey formally recognizes the life, service, and sacrifice of a son of our state who answered the call to protect others,” said Assemblyman Karabinchak. “This designation ensures his legacy will always be remembered.”

“Officer Brian Sicknick represented the very best of public service,” said Assemblyman Stanley. “By setting aside this day each year, we ensure that the memory of his service is never forgotten and reaffirm our commitment to honoring those who lost their lives fulfilling their duty to protect others.”

Following the bill signing, Governor Murphy, Speaker Craig J. Coughlin and Assemblymen Joe Danielsen, Karabinchak and Stanley participated in a wreath placement ceremony in Officer Sicknick’s honor.

“A life dedicated to service and country reminds us that the safety and stability we count on never happens by accident, it comes from those who never lose sight of their responsibility to the people around them,” said Speaker Coughlin. “Officer Brian Sicknick showed up, did his duty, and stood firm when our democracy needed defending. A proud son of New Jersey, shaped by his family, his community, and his commitment to serving others, he will forever be remembered and deeply missed by his home state and by all who loved him.”

“Officer Brian Sicknick answered the call to serve with courage and dedication,” said Assemblyman Danielsen (D-Middlesex, Somerset). “Honoring him with this designation is a meaningful way to ensure that future generations remember his service and the sacrifices made by those who protect others.”

Last year, Officer Sicknick’s brother—Craig Sicknick—delivered remarks on the General Assembly floor after receiving a ceremonial resolution honoring Officer Sicknick’s life and service.

Statement from Speaker Coughlin on Governor-elect Sherrill’s Decision to Keep Kris Kolluri as Head of NJ Transit and Run New Jersey Turnpike Authority

“From the very beginning of his service at New Jersey Transit, Kris Kolluri has been a tireless advocate for our state’s public transportation system, making sure the agency is not only on firm ground but also moving forward in the right direction. I commend Governor-elect Sherrill’s decision to keep him in place and naming him to lead the Turnpike Authority is a credit to the work already underway thanks to his leadership and experience.

“In New Jersey, our transportation infrastructure is the lifeblood of our economy and a driving force behind our success, keeping our commuters connected and making sure our state maintains its competitive edge in the region. As we stand on the cusp of an unprecedented coordination of our transit system and highways with eight World Cup matches, including the final, continuity of leadership at New Jersey Transit is critical and I look forward to working together to support the progress that keeps our state moving.”

New Jersey Menopause Coverage Act Signed Into Law

Governor Murphy today signed Bill A5278, the “New Jersey Menopause Coverage Act,” into law. Sponsored by Assemblywoman Heather Simmons, Assemblyman Roy Freiman, and Assemblywoman Lisa Swain, this legislation would require health insurers to cover diagnosis and treatment of menopause symptoms.

Under the bill, health insurance carriers will be required to cover medically necessary treatment for perimenopause, menopause, and symptoms associated with perimenopause and menopause. This includes hormonal therapies, non-hormonal treatments, behavioral health care, pelvic floor physical therapy, bone health treatments, preventative services, and counseling and education regarding treatment.

“For too long, menopause has been treated as a private burden rather than a public health issue,” said Assemblywoman Simmons (D-Gloucester, Salem, Cumberland). “This legislation sends a clear message. Your symptoms are real. Your health matters. New Jersey is stepping up.”

According to data cited by the National Institute for Health, approximately 1.3 million people become menopausal each year. The Mayo Clinic estimates that menopause related symptoms result in $1.8 billion in lost productivity annually across the United States.

“This bill is about applying common sense to an overlooked part of healthcare,” said Assemblyman Freiman (D-Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Somerset). “Menopause affects a significant portion of our population each year, and it’s time our insurance policies reflect that reality. Providing coverage is not just good health policy. It’s smart, equitable, and long overdue.”

Currently, insurance coverage for menopause in New Jersey depends on the specific plan and treatment. Coverage is ultimately determined by the insurance provider.

“Menopause care has been overlooked for decades,” said Assemblywoman Swain (D-Bergen). “Women deserve access that supports their health, careers, and quality of life. This bill is about fairness, dignity, and updating our healthcare system to match reality.”

Asm. Clinton Calabrese’s Statement on Selection of Kris Kolluri to Lead NJ Transit & NJ Turnpike Authority

“I commend Governor-elect Sherrill for selecting Kris Kolluri to continue leading New Jersey Transit and for her decision to expand his responsibilities to include the New Jersey Turnpike Authority. This is a forward-thinking and strategic choice that reflects the need for unified leadership as New Jersey works to modernize its infrastructure and meet the needs of a growing and mobile population.

“Mr. Kolluri brings unmatched experience and a proven record of results across the public transportation sector. From his tenure as New Jersey’s Transportation Commissioner to his leadership of the Gateway Development Commission and now NJ Transit, he has demonstrated a deep understanding of our state’s complex transit systems and a strong commitment to improving them for commuters, businesses, and future generations.

“As Chairman of the Assembly Transportation and Independent Authorities Committee, I look forward to working with Mr. Kolluri in his expanded role to enhance coordination between our state’s largest transportation agencies. This collaboration will be especially critical as we prepare to host global events such as the FIFA World Cup, which will test the capacity, safety, and efficiency of our transit system on an international stage.

“Mr. Kolluri’s dual appointment presents a unique opportunity to break down silos, streamline operations, and rethink how we move people and goods across New Jersey. I am confident that under his leadership, we will see a transportation strategy that is innovative, accountable, and focused on delivering real-world results for the residents of our state.”

Bill Creating Doula & Midwife Services Public Awareness Campaign Signed into Law

Legislation would promote the benefits doulas and midwives can bring to the birthing process (TRENTON) — Legislation tasking the New Jersey Maternal and Infant Health Innovation Authority with establishing a public awareness campaign to promote the benefits of doula and midwife services was signed into law today. Assemblywomen Shanique SpeightLisa SwainVerlina Reynolds-Jackson and Carmen Morales sponsored A4222. “Doulas and midwives have a long history of providing care and tirelessly advocating for their patients as they experience one of life’s most challenging and most rewarding moments – childbirth,” said Assemblywoman Speight (D-Essex).
“Through this bill, we aim to increase public awareness about the benefits of doulas and midwives and the critical role they play in improving health outcomes by supporting individuals and contributing to a more inclusive and compassionate birthing process.” Under A4222, the campaign materials will showcase the health benefits and improved maternal and infant health outcomes that may result from doulas and midwives; and publicize any free or low-cost resources made available by the State for doula and midwife services. “Many think of midwives and doulas as someone who can help in the moment of labor, but the support they offer starts long before delivery and remains in place well after,” said Assemblywoman Swain (D-Bergen). “This bill will ensure expectant mothers are aware of the full range of medical, educational, and emotional services these professionals provide before, during, and after childbirth.”“With this legislation, we raise awareness and empower mothers with knowledge, support, and the resources they need for a healthier, happier pregnancy and birth experience,” said Assemblywoman Reynolds-Jackson (D-Mercer, Hunterdon). “By providing constituents with knowledge of doula services we give them the tools to make informed decisions about their pregnancy and childbirth.” “Having a trained professional to guide you through one of life’s most transformational moments has advantages for mother and baby alike,” said Assemblywoman Morales (D-Essex). “It’s our job as legislators to make sure that parents-to-be have access to the most information possible to help them through this time. The signing into law of Bill A4222 today is an important step in enabling us to do that.” The establishment of the public awareness campaign would be contingent on the availability of funds.
