DOVER (Oct. 23, 2015) – To achieve public compliance through education and enforcement actions that help conserve Delaware’s fish and wildlife resources and ensure safe boating and public safety, DNREC Division of Fish & Wildlife Natural Resources Police officers between Oct. 12-18 made 1,289 contacts with anglers, boaters, hunters and the general public, including 254 vessel boardings for boating safety and fishing regulation compliance checks. Officers responded to 31 complaints and issued 20 citations, two of which were related to the C&D Canal Conservation Area and associated recreational trail, where there is an increased Fish & Wildlife Natural Resources Police presence.

Newswise — A research team working in the Galapagos Archipelago has discovered there are two species of giant tortoises — not just one, as had been long believed — living on the island of Santa Cruz in the center of the Galapagos Archipelago.

The discovery of the new species, (see photo) detailed in a study reported today (Oct. 21) in the journal \”PLOS ONE,\” is likely to help focus attention on the newly named Eastern Santa Cruz Tortoise (Chelonoidis donfaustoi), said Dr. James Gibbs, a team member and conservation biologist at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, New York. Gibbs’ work on this discovery and others has been done in collaboration with the Galapagos National Park Service, Yale University and the Galapagos Conservancy.

PRIME HOOK, Del. (Oct. 23, 2015) – Although Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge will not be hosting waterfowl hunting this year due to an ongoing wetland restoration project, hunters will still be able to hunt from state blinds on the adjoining state-owned Prime Hook Wildlife Area and, like last year, participate in blind drawings at the federal refuge’s check station, DNREC’s Division of Fish & Wildlife announced today.

Today Angel is a therapy dog who visits hospitals and assisted-care facilities. For her efforts, Houston Mayor Annise Parker proclaimed Angel the Official Therapy Dog of Houston.

Herrera began rescue work in 2001 at the prodding of her mother. In addition to co-founding the Golden Retriever Rescue of Houston in 2002, she adopted an orthopedically challenged Golden named Rosie and started a fund to help people who adopt dogs with special needs.

NEWARK, N.J. – Two Indian nationals will appear in federal court today to face charges that they conspired to use commercial airline flights to smuggle foreign nationals into the United States, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced. Nileshkumar Patel, 41, and Harsad Mehta, 65, both of India, are charged by criminal complaint with one count of conspiracy to bring in and harbor aliens. In addition, Patel is charged with six counts and Mehta is charged with four counts of smuggling foreign nationals into the United States for private financial gain.

PHILADELPHIA – Thael Kuran, 23, of Philadelphia, PA, pleaded guilty today to conspiracy to commit health care fraud and making false statements in a health care matter. The charges stem from a fraud scheme involving Brotherly Love Ambulance, Inc. U.S. District Court Judge Gerald J. Pappert scheduled a sentencing hearing for January 19, 2016. Kuran faces a maximum possible sentence of 15 years in prison, three years of supervised release, a $500,000 fine, and a $200 special assessment.
