Secretary Turner announced the “Made in America” theme for HUD’s sixth annual Innovative Housing Showcase, returning to the National Mall in Washington, D.C. September 22 – September 24, 2026. The Freedom 250 event will showcase American innovations that can help expand housing supply, lower construction costs, and make homeownership more attainable.

The General Assembly on Tuesday passed a three-bill package sponsored by Assemblywoman Andrea Katz that addresses the growing youth mental health crisis and strengthens protections for minors online.
“Social media has become a central part of daily life for young people, but we are learning more and more about the risks that can come with excessive use, addictive platform features, and the collection of minors’ personal data,” said Assemblywoman Katz (D-Atlantic, Burlington). “As a mom of three teenagers, I know social media isn’t going anywhere. Our responsibility is to make sure the digital world is safer for kids. This package takes a thoughtful, comprehensive approach by strengthening privacy protections, investing in research, and giving policymakers the information they need to better protect children while helping families and educators support healthier online habits.”

July 4 is a license-free fishing day throughout Maryland, so if you have a friend or relative who doesn’t currently fish, take them out with you.
Large red drum are providing catch-and-release fishing for anglers near the mouth of the Potomac River.
White perch can be found in the tidal rivers and creeks, sometimes mixed in with spot and croaker.
All the tidal rivers have populations of blue and channel catfish, and the larger female blue catfish are showing signs of being finished with spawning; they are now on the prowl to build up body stores. .
The Philadelphia Police Department’s Homicide Unit is investigating a fatal stabbing that occurred July 2, 2026 in the 12th District.
Approximately 7:30 p.m., officers responded to the 6300 block of Dicks Avenue, where they located a 31-year-old male suffering from a single stab wound to his left arm. The victim was transported by officers to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased at 8:09 p.m.

On Tuesday, New Jersey finalized its nearly $61 billion 2027 budget, which was amended to include $1 million in funding for the Civic Information Consortium, the groundbreaking program that has, since 2021, granted more than $12.5 million in private and public-sector funding to local news and civic information initiatives.
The draft budget proposal unveiled in March by Gov. Mikie Sherrill did not include any funding for the Consortium, which the year prior received $2.5 million from the state. Legislative lawmakers were able to add back in funding for the initiative, though the $1 million is below what was sought by advocates for the program.
