What is a Smart City?

PHILADELPHIA PA–In 2017, the City launched the SmartCityPHL initiative to help improve service delivery for its broad community of residents, businesses, and visitors. While developing a roadmap to guide this initiative, we engaged community members and organizations in workshops designed to build a shared foundation for how technology can make Philadelphia a better place to live.

At its most basic level, the

SmartCityPHL Roadmap

defines a smart city as one that uses data and technology to improve the quality of life for those who live, work, and visit our diverse city.

To further shape the development of smart city projects and technology, we identified four guiding principles unique to Philadelphia’s approach:

Locally-inspired:

We will pursue projects that accurately reflect the needs of Philadelphia’s communities and use the unique assets, culture, and existing resources present in the city.

Innovative:

We will grow our capacity for research, discovery, piloting and evaluation to develop creative solutions to municipal challenges.

Equitable:

We will strive to engage and invest in our diverse communities so that all Philadelphians can benefit from and contribute ideas to smart city activities.

Collaborative:

We will collaborate on project development and implementation with stakeholders and partners from government, private sector, startup, civic technology, academia, and local neighborhoods.

These goals represent primary considerations when forming and evaluating SmartCityPHL projects.

Pitch & Pilot

, a new program designed to identify and test innovative approaches to municipal challenges, is a prime example of putting these principles into practice. The SmartCityPHL guidelines drive Pitch & Pilot’s process of choosing challenges, soliciting and evaluating proposals, and assessing the success of a pilot project. Our goals for this exciting initiative are to engage Philadelphia’s diverse community and work together to discover solutions to the city’s challenges.

Avalon Receives $177,000 NJDOT Grant for Reconstruction of Portion of 69th Street

AVALON, NJ–The Borough of Avalon is receiving a $177,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation. The grant will be used for the Borough’s reconstruction of a portion of 69

Street between Dune Drive and Ocean Drive. The project is expected to begin in 2020.

“We are very appreciative of the Department taking a close look at this project and providing funding to help defray costs for municipal taxpayers”, said Avalon Mayor Martin Pagliughi. “Avalon has been fortunate to submit competitive grant applications in prior years. These grants allow the Borough to repair and replace necessary infrastructure”.

Since 1997, the Borough of Avalon has secured approximately $2.9 million from the New Jersey Department of Transportation for various street projects. Last year, the Borough received a $150,000 grant from the program for the reconstruction of a portion of 68

Street.

In 2019, the Department received 661 applications that requested more than $368 million for projects. Funding comes from the Transportation Trust Fund which is supported by the State gasoline tax. $161.25 million was allocated to projects throughout the State of New Jersey for the NJDOT’s Fiscal Year 2020 Municipal Aid Program. The application for the grant was made by Avalon municipal engineer Thomas Thornton of Mott MacDonald and previously authorized by the Avalon Borough Council.

Ginger Radzieta Wins 2020 Avalon Beach Tag Art Contest

(Avalon, NJ)–Fifth grade Avalon Elementary School student Ginger Radzieta, pictured with Avalon Business Administrator Scott Wahl is the winner of the

Annual Beach Tag Art contest sponsored by the Avalon Elementary School and the Borough of Avalon. Ginger was presented with the very first beach tag of the 2020 beach season with her artwork, along with a plaque from Mayor Martin Pagliughi congratulating her on the award.

Each year, students at the Avalon Elementary School are asked to design the art work for the following summer’s seasonal beach tag. Dozens of entries are submitted to Mayor Martin Pagliughi who chooses the winning design.

The presentation was made to Ginger at the Avalon Elementary School on Friday, December 13

to kick off the annual holiday program at the school.

Coast Guard responds to diesel discharge caused by boat fires in Great Egg Harbor

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. — The Coast Guard is responding to a discharge of diesel from two submerged vessels at Seaview Harbor Marina in Great Egg Harbor, Monday morning.

Watch standers at Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay received the report of the vessel fires from local police dispatch at approximately 1:50 a.m.

The estimated maximum potential for the discharge is an estimated 2,000 gallons of diesel. There have been no reports of impacts to wildlife at this time.

“Our pollution investigators are on-scene and overseeing commercial cleanup operations,” said Chief Petty Officer Christopher Brady, command duty officer at Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay. “Our goal is to ensure safe operations and to help mitigate environmental impacts resulting from the discharge.”

A salvage plan is currently being drafted by the responsible party for approval by the U.S. Coast Guard. The cause of the incident is currently under investigation.

Congressman Norcross Says Van Drew Needs to Apologize

I was one of the earliest people in Congress to back an impeachment inquiry years ago because we must act to defend our democracy. Whatever party he claims to represent, Van Drew is just plain wrong to support Trump’s corrupt actions. I look forward to supporting the Democratic candidate next year who will truly represent South Jersey’s values.\”

*Camden County Offering Free Senior Legal Workshops

The Camden County Board of Freeholders, the Department of Health and Human Services – Division of Senior & Disabled Services and the Surrogate’s Office announce free legal workshops for senior and disabled residents of Camden County. Those attending this workshop receive, at no cost, a Last Will and Testament, an Advance Directive for Health Care (Living Will) and Power of Attorney (POA).

Participants are required to be Camden County residents aged 60 and over. Disabled citizens must be aged 18 and over and residents of Camden County. Workshops are limited to 35 participants per session and pre-registration is required. DUE TO A HIGH DEMAND, YOU NEED TO CALL FOR AN APPOINTMENT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THE WORKSHOPS FILL UP VERY QUICKLY.

The workshops are held every Monday of the month except if that Monday is an official holiday, then the workshop will be held on that Tuesday. There are three workshops beginning at 2:00 pm and one evening workshop at 6:00 pm.

Please note that the clinic held at night (6:00 pm) does not offer a Power of Attorney (POA), only a will and living will.

Casha: How Will \”Follow The Leader Mikie” Vote On Impeachment

Kinnelon, NJ- Larry Casha candidate for the 11th Congressional District released the following

statement:

How will “Follow the Leader Mikie” vote on Impeachment?

“The impeachment proceedings of President Trump have been under the microscope since day

one, questioned, attacked and defended by many pundits and talking heads. Speaker Pelosi

attacked the President with much fervor, charging him over the past several weeks with bribery.

All the while, Representative Mikie Sherrill followed the Speaker’s lead.”

“Now, the case for impeaching the President is for having abused his power and obstructed a

congressional investigation into his conduct in Ukraine. Wait…Where did the "bribery" charge go?

Why were Pelosi and Sherrill so convinced that it was a clear case of bribery yet now,

bribery is nowhere to be found? The answer is that the word “bribery” tests well in the “swing”

states. However, bribery is, and always was, a false charge. In her campaign just last year,

Representative Sherrill repeatedly said “FACTS MATTER” !!! So why didn’t facts matter when

accusing the President of the United States of bribery? Will the facts matter to Representative

Sherrill when she is presented with the opportunity to vote on impeachment or will she just

follow the leader?

“The false bribery charge is just one more example of “Follow the Leader Mikie”. She said in

the 2018 campaign that she would & bring new leadership to Washington. Well, it looks like the same old Nancy Pelosi politics to me.”

Pick-6 Rolls to $4.2 Million for Dec. 16 Drawing

TRENTON (Dec. 13, 2019) – The Pick-6 drawing on December 12 produced three winners of $7,875 for matching five out of six white balls drawn. The $4.2 million drawing will be held Monday, December 16, 2019.

The winning numbers for the Thursday, December 12, drawing were: 01, 07, 37, 38, 46 and 49. The XTRA Multiplier was: 03. By adding XTRA for an additional $1.00 per play, winners are able to multiply their non-jackpot prizes by the XTRA number drawn.

Acting Executive Director James Carey announced that there were 472,546 tickets purchased for the drawing and of those sold, thousands were prizewinners! For correctly matching four numbers, 308 ticketholders won $73 each and 48 others won $219 each with the addition of XTRA. Moreover, for correctly matching three numbers 6,021 ticketholders won $3.00 each and 877 others won $9 each with the addition of XTRA. Lastly 7,454 ticketholders each won $2.00 for correctly matching two numbers with the addition of XTRA on their purchase.
