According to the preliminary investigation, officers assigned to the Atlantic City Police Department’s (ACPD) SWAT team, along with members of the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office SWAT team, attempted to execute a search warrant at a residence on the 100 block of North Florida Avenue on June 2, 2026. Upon arrival, officers observed the front door was open, but an individual inside closed it. Officers announced their presence and purpose at the door, then used a mechanical device to breach it.
As the door opened, Mr. Gardner, who was inside the residence, fired multiple gunshots at the officers. A projectile hit one ACPD officer in the helmet; another ACPD officer sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. Officer Robert Reynolds of the ACPD, who was not struck by gunfire, responded and fired his weapon multiple times, striking Mr. Gardner. Mr. Gardner was subsequently pronounced deceased. A handgun was recovered from the residence. The two wounded officers were transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center.
The circumstances of the encounter and cause and manner of death are under investigation, which is ongoing. No further information is being released at this time.
A 2019 law, N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a)(2), requires the Attorney General’s Office to conduct investigations of a person’s death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody. It requires that all such investigations be presented to a grand jury to determine if the evidence supports the return of an indictment against the officer or officers involved.

Elfego Baca was a handsome young sheriff’s deputy when he had his famous two-day gun battle with 80 cowhands from the Texas John Slaughter ranch. He survived, and four cowboys didn’t. A 12-year-old girl with a severe hazelnut allergy died after suffering a fatal allergic reaction from a milkshake prepared in an unwashed blender at a London café, an inquest has determined.
Mia Shay St Hilaire</Mentioned Person> suffered anaphylaxis after drinking the milkshake at the Pop Inn Café in Bermondsey, London, during a visit with family in August 2023. The inquest, held at Inner South London Coroner’s Court on Oct. 8, concluded that the drink had been contaminated with hazelnut residue left behind from a previously prepared milkshake.
Evidence presented during the hearing included CCTV footage showing café operator Baris Yucel</Mentioned Person> using a blender that had not been washed before preparing Mia’s drink.
Despite emergency efforts and her transfer to the intensive care unit at Evelina London Children’s Hospital, Mia could not be saved.
Assistant Coroner Briony Ballard</Mentioned Person> ruled that the milkshake had been cross-contaminated with traces of hazelnut from an earlier beverage prepared in the same blender. The resulting allergic reaction progressed rapidly, causing Mia to collapse later at her aunt’s home.
The tragedy prompted legal action against the café. In January 2025, Yucel pleaded guilty to six food safety and allergen-related offenses after Southwark Council brought the case.
The violations included failing to provide visible allergen information to customers, not adequately preventing allergen cross-contamination during food preparation, and serving food that contained undeclared allergens. The case has renewed concerns about allergen awareness and food safety practices in restaurants and cafés, particularly for customers with life-threatening food allergies.
