Walk into almost any place where games are offered and you will probably see something familiar. The casino slot machine is one of those objects most people recognize right away, even if they have never used one. Around Gloucester City and the surrounding area, plenty of residents will have seen these machines on trips, day outings, or weekends away. What often gets missed is how much these machines have changed. The story is not about big wins or losses. It is about how a simple idea kept being reworked as times changed and how a piece of everyday entertainment found ways to stay relevant.

Long before screens and apps, slot machines were built as solid, physical objects. They were meant to be touched, heard and watched. The sound of reels spinning and stopping was part of the experience and for many people that sound is still tied to memories of visiting gaming venues or passing through entertainment spots in the region.

Overnight Incidents

The following information is preliminary and subject to change as the investigation continues. Updates will be provided as they become available.

The Philadelphia Police Department is currently investigating several overnight shooting incidents and a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred across the city.

On March 1, 2026, at approximately 1:51 a.m., officers from the 12th District responded to the area of 60th Street and Greenway Avenue for a report of a person with a gun. Upon arrival, officers located a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the left thigh. The victim was transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition. At this time, no arrests have been made, and a motive has not been determined. The investigation is ongoing with the Shooting Investigation Group.

Shooting and Double Stabbing Investigation

At approximately 3:45 p.m., police responded to the 3100 block of Jasper Street in the 24th District for reports of a shooting and stabbing involving three adult males.

All three individuals were found on the highway with injuries. Police transported Victim #1, a 26-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the stomach, to Temple Hospital. Victim #2, a 22-year-old male, was also transported to Temple Hospital with stab wounds to his stomach. A third victim, a 21-year-old male, walked into Episcopal Hospital with a stab wound to his torso and was later transferred to Temple Hospital by a medic unit. 

At this time, all three victims are reported to be in stable condition. There is currently no known motive, and no arrests have been made. The incident remains under active investigation by the Shooting Investigation Group.

 I-295 southbound/Al-Jo’s Curve to be Closed & Detoured Along With Route 30, Cooper Ave. to Grove Street

Closure necessary for drainage work and retaining wall construction

The I-295 southbound ramp to Route 42 southbound and I-295 southbound, also known as Al-Jo’s Curve, is scheduled to be closed and detoured as the Direct Connection project advances in Bellmawr, Camden County. This is a continuation of work that began in January.

Beginning at 10 p.m. Monday, March 2 until 5 a.m. Tuesday, March 3, and continuing each night through Thursday, March 5 at the same time, the I-295 southbound ramp to Route 42 southbound and I-295 southbound, also known as Al-Jo’s Curve, is scheduled to be closed and detoured. The right lane on I-295 southbound also will be closed just after Exit 28/Route 168. All motorists traveling on I-295 southbound will be directed to stay left onto Exit 26. The closures are necessary for drainage work and retaining wall construction. The following detour will be in place:

Camden County Roadwork Projects

Several roadway projects will be underway across Camden County during the week of March 2 to March 6. 

“Motorists should plan ahead to take alternate routes and give themselves plenty of time to get to their destinations,” said Commissioner Al Dyer, liaison to the Department of Public Works. “Also, remember that when you’re traveling through a construction area, please slow down and stay alert for crew members and debris.”

Berlin Township

South Jersey Gas will be working on Hopewell Road & Cooper Road from Monday, March 2 to Thursday, March 5, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. From Monday – Thursday, there will be a full road closure of Cooper Road at the intersection with Taunton Avenue in Berlin Township.

Camden

Crews will be working on 5th and Market Street from Monday, March 2, to Thursday, March 5 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be pedestrian access as well as a lane of travel open during the day.

The Board of Commissioners attended the ribbon cutting of Maryville Integrated Care’s new outpatient office,  526 S Burnt Mill Road in Voorhees Township.

“Maryville Integrated Care has been an incredible partner in our ongoing fight against the opioid epidemic,” said Commissioner Director Louis Cappelli Jr. “We are thrilled that this new facility is located in Camden County, ensuring that our residents will have enhanced access to lifesaving treatment.”

The Voorhees office offers Outpatient Treatment, Intensive Outpatient, and Medication-Assisted Treatment for adults and adolescents 11 – 17 seeking flexible, ongoing recovery support.
