Leopold Leonard \”Uncle Leo\” Kacmarcik was called back to heaven after
ninety-one years, four months, and eighteen days. Born in Graceton, PA and raised in Nemacolin, PA, he was Roman Catholic. During the summer Leo, like his father, was a coal miner at the Buckeye Coal Mine where he learned teamwork and leadership skills through hard work. A natural athlete in high school, Leo varsity lettered in football all four years at Carmichaels High School in Carmichaels, PA. Having earned all of the academic requirements for graduation, Leo graduated from high school six months early and with his mother’s blessing, proudly volunteered to serve his country from 1943 through 1946 in World War II and later in support of the Korean War.
