NOAA Fisheries reminds Atlantic Tunas General category permit holders and Highly Migratory Species Charter/Headboat permit holders fishing commercially for bluefin tuna that the General category fishery will re-open June 1, 2026.
General Category Retention Limits
Unless modified, the following default retention limits apply:
June 1-June 30: 3 large medium or giant bluefin tuna (measuring 73 inches or greater curved fork length) per vessel per day/trip
July 1-December 31: 1 large medium or giant bluefin tuna (measuring 73 inches or greater curved fork length) per vessel per day/trip
Restricted-Fishing Day (RFD) Schedule
Every Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday from July 1 through November 30, 2026, will be a restricted-fishing day (RFD) (i.e., no commercial retention of bluefin tuna and no catch-and-release or tag-and-release bluefin tuna fishing by General category permit holders is allowed). Highly Migratory Species Charter/Headboat vessels can fish recreationally for bluefin tuna on RFDs. NOAA Fisheries may decide to waive an RFD depending on catch rates and other factors.
Coordinate with a Dealer Before Fishing
NOAA Fisheries suggests coordinating with a dealer before fishing to make sure you can sell the fish according to the regulations. Atlantic Tunas General category permit holders and Highly Migratory Species Charter/Headboat permit holders with a commercial sale endorsement cannot land, sell, or transfer a bluefin tuna to a dealer on a RFD, regardless of when the vessel returns to the dock. If unable to sell the fish, you must also report the fish by calling (978) 281-9213 to obtain a tag number.
Reporting Requirements
Bluefin tuna must be reported by permit holders via the Highly Migratory Species Permit Shop, Highly Migratory Species Catch Reporting App, or by calling (888) 872-8862. If you use eTrips for reporting for-hire trips, you may also use it for Highly Migratory Species.
