Look for a celebration of gay joy with dozens of festivals, parades, marches, flag raisings, drag shows, dance parties, community fairs, artist events, benefits, concerts, performances and more. Also available for the month of June, will be the Lavender Menace Sundae, Lavender Honey Caramel Ice Cream, Green Tea Ice Cream, Hot Fudge, Whipped Cream, Purple Sprinkles – and fully recommended in a Maple Waffle Cone Bowl. $2 from every Lavender Menace Sundae will be donated to the the Mazzoni Center while their regular philanthropic strawberry sundae, the Have A Heart Charity Sundae will be donating to the Welcoming Center.
Lavender Menace was an informal group of lesbian radical feminists formed to protest the exclusion of lesbians and their issues from the feminist movement at the Second Congress to Unite Women in New York City on May 1, 1970. Purple and its flowers of lavender and violet, have been a symbol for homosexuality since the late 19th c when archeologists discovered portions of the poems of Sappho, which contained references to violets. By 1920 “Das Lila Lied” (The Lavender Song), the first queer anthem, was being sung across Berlin.
While the First Wave Feminists, like Suzanne B Anthony refused to share the quest for suffrage with the Black community, the Second Wave Feminists refused to acknowledge the unique struggles and contributions of queer women. In 1969 the president of National Organization for Women, Betty Friedan, coined the phrase “Lavender Menace” to describe the threat that she believed associations with lesbianism posed. Like many oppressed peoples, the lesbian feminist movement took up the name Lavender Menance in an act of reclamation and rebellion.

By William Way LGBT Community Center
At Huddle, 338 Brown Street, Philadelphia, PA 19123

This Is (Not) a Celebration: Queer Resistance, 1976/2026 reveals the history of Philadelphia’s LGBTQ+ organizing, activism, and protest during the Bicentennial through rarely seen archival materials and the work of three local artists; Scarlett DeLorme, Justin Jain, and Amy Cousins, whose work engages with these stories through a contemporary lens.
Within the civic reflection of the 250th of the United States, This Is (Not) a Celebration shifts the focus from commemoration to resistance. Organized by the William Way LGBT Community Center, artists were invited to create work in dialogue with materials from the Center’s John J. Wilcox, Jr. Archives—the most extensive collection documenting the history of Philadelphia’s LGBTQ community. Scarlett DeLorme’s wet plate photography, Justin Jain’s ceramics, and Amy Cousins’ print and fiber installations insist that 1976 was not a moment of patriotic consensus, but one of queer defiance.
There will be an opening reception on Thursday, June 11, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. On Thursday, June 25, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, there will be an artist talk. The gallery is open Friday and Saturday from 12:00pm to 6:00pm. The gallery will be closed on Juneteenth and July 4th.
