The Camden County History Alliance invites the public to join us for Camden County History Month from October 1 to October 31, 2026, when over 25 participating historic sites and history organizations throughout Camden County will be open with special exhibits, reenactments, and guided tours for adults and children, both in-person and virtual, spanning centuries of history. The vast majority of the more than fifty events and activities during the month are free.
As we celebrate America’s 250th, we invite you to tour the new American Revolution Museum of Southern New Jersey in the historic 1734 Benjamin Cooper Tavern on October 11. Visit the 1756 Gabreil Daveis Tavern Museum on October 11 & 25 and discover Local Revolutionary War Happenings and Heroes. Learn about the Matlack family and “Waterford’s Revolutionary Footprints” with the Waterford Township Historical Society on October 7. Attend a presentation “Hue and Cry: Attempts to Capture William Livingston During the American Revolution” with the Indian King Tavern Museum on October 17. Sail aboard the Schooner North Wind with Gloucester City Sail and hear about the American Revolution along the Delaware River on October 25 ($38 tickets), or come early for the free open house aboard the schooner.
Visitors will have the opportunity to tour several historic buildings from across three centuries throughout the county during October. Colonial taverns open during the month include the Benjamin Cooper Tavern and the Gabreil Daveis Tavern. On October 4, step back in time at the Griffith Morgan Homestead in Pennsauken and tour the historic 1825 Collings-Knight House in Collingswood. The 1816 Barclay Farmstead Museum in Cherry Hill will also be open for tours on October 4 and Wednesday afternoons in October ($3-$5 tickets). Visit the Whitman Stafford Farmhouse in Laurel Spring on October 6, or come on October 17 for a meet & greet with Walt Whitman. The ornate St. Joseph’s Polish Catholic Church from the early 20th century can be toured on October 10.
Explore Camden County’s African American history by participating in a walking tour of Black Haddonfield with The Preserving Black Haddonfield History Project on October 10 ($10 suggested donation), or join them online for virtual tours of Underground Railroad Safe Houses. Celebrate Lawnside’s 100th Anniversary exhibit with the Lawnside Historical Society by attending the gallery talk at the Camden County Historical Society on October 15. Come to the Lawnside Historical Society’s plaque installation ceremony at the Peter Mott House Underground Museum on October 24 ($5-$10 tickets). Enjoy the Fall Harvest Gospel Concert Celebration on the lawn of the Haddonfield Public Library with The Preserving Black Haddonfield History Project on October 25 ($10 suggested donation).
Celebrate the autumn season with events featuring harvest and Halloween this month. In addition to the Fall Harvest Gospel Concert Celebration on October 25, The Preserving Black Haddonfield History Project will also be participating in the Haddonfield Fall Festival on October 3. Learn about “Fall Harvest & Colonial Folklore” at the Griffith Morgan Homestead on October 4. Halloween-themed activities include Haunted Haddonfield Walking Tours presented by the Historical Society of Haddonfield on Friday and Saturday evenings, October 9-24 ($20 tickets). The Gloucester Township Historic & Scenic Preservation Committee will sponsor a Halloween Paranormal Night on October 10 at the Gabreil Daveis Tavern Museum ($20 tickets). Hear ghost stories of the haunted White Hill Mansion at a presentation hosted by the Haddon Heights Historical Society on October 19. Discover “The Science of Frankenstein” at the Indian King Tavern Museum on October 23. Enjoy Glendora’s Neighborhood Halloween Parade at the Gabreil Daveis Tavern Museum on October 24. Finally, the Barrington Historical Society will host a program on “How to Hunt the Jersey Devil” on October 26.
Journey into the past with events spanning centuries of history. The Haddonfield Friends Meeting will host author Margaret Cotton on October 8, discussing the 17th-century Quaker Mary Dyer. The Old Baldy Civil War Round Table’s virtual program on October 8 will feature “Between the Battlefield and the Bullet: The United States Army Medical Department in the Civil War.” Railroad enthusiasts will enjoy visiting the Historic Berlin Railroad Depot, built in 1856, which will be open for tours on October 17, while the West Jersey Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society will host a presentation on the famous Blue Comet at the Audubon Senior Center (also available by zoom). Tour the historic Battleship New Jersey during evening tours on October 2 & 23 ($30-$40 tickets).
Acknowledge the horrors of the Holocaust with the 25th Anniversary performance of the play “Dear Esther” with the Esther Raab Holocaust Museum & Goodwin Education Center on October 18. Attend a performance at the Ritz Theatre Company of “Trolls and Men,” based on the true story of a theatre in Norway and their resistance against the Nazis, on October 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, 21, 23, 24, and 24 ($20-$40 tickets). Stand against hate by participating in the March of Remembrance on October 18.
Many other events this month celebrate our 20th century history. Celebrate Philadelphia Football History and the 100th Anniversary of the Frankford Yellow Jackets winning the NFL Championship with the Merchantville Historical Society on October 6. Tour the new Audubon Historical Society Museum on October 10 in the Audubon Senior Center. Come to the History of Lindenwold Show and Tell event on October 17, organized by the Lindenwold Historical Committee. Attend the Clementon Historical Commission Open House on October 21, with displays on Clementon Park. Visit the Winslow Township History Center on October 11 & 25. There are plenty of opportunities to explore our history this month!
Camden County History Month is hosted by the Camden County History Alliance, an association of over 50 Camden County history organizations, historic sites, and support agencies. The History Alliance was created in 2016 to identify resources, increase the number of visitors, and institute projects that promote Camden County heritage. The Camden County Historical Society manages the work of the History Alliance.
