NUIQSUT VILLAGE, ALASKA (CNBNews)– Adam Tussey Sr. recently photographed a rainbow hovering over Nuiqsut Village while working nearby. Tussey is employed by Tanco Engineering as operations manager.
Nuiqsut sits in one of North America’s most important oil-producing regions. The nearby Alpine oil field and the controversial Willow Project have brought jobs and revenue, but also ongoing debate over environmental impacts, air quality, and effects on subsistence hunting.
To someone from South Jersey, Nuiqsut would feel like another world: treeless Arctic tundra, months of winter darkness, almost continuous summer daylight, and a culture deeply tied to the land, river, and sea. The village is considered the northernmost community with seasonal road access to Alaska’s highway system. The city prohibits possessing, selling, and importing alcoholic beverages.
Traditional subsistence activities remain central to daily life. Residents harvest:
- Bowhead whales
- Caribou
- Seals
- Moose
- Waterfowl
- Whitefish, Arctic char, burbot, and grayling
These activities are both culturally and economically important.

Besides the rainbow photo, Tussey submitted a photo of a mountainous landscape and stream he passed while driving to another part of Alaska. He said he saw many elk and mountain goats.
