Of the more than 2,200 people who received federal sentences for drug possession in fiscal year 2014, almost three-quarters of them were illegal immigrants, according to new data from the United States Sentencing Commission.

Illegal immigrants also made up more than one-third of all federal sentences, that data said.

The commission\’s data showed a slight decline in the total number of illegal alien sentences from 2013 to 2014, but still showed that the illegal population is a major contributor to federal crimes in America.

In 2013, illegal immigrants were responsible for 38.6 percent of all federal sentencing, and that dropped to 36.7 percent in 2014.

But the sentencing of illegal immigrants for drug possession jumped significantly. In 2013, 1,123 illegal immigrants were sentenced on convictions of simple possession, and made up 55.8 percent of those cases.

In 2014, 1,681 illegal aliens were sentenced, and they made up 74.1 percent of the total. Illegal immigrants were also 16.9 percent of all federal drug trafficking sentences.

The data became public just as Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has pushed for tougher immigration laws, and has cited last week\’s shooting death of a California woman at the hands of an illegal immigrant as the latest example of the need for more enforcement.

A hearing to address the OPRA counts in the case (Docket No. UNN-L-1927-15) is scheduled for July 10 at 10:00 a.m. before Judge James Hely, J.S.C. OPMA counts will be addressed at a later date.
 
The lawsuit is the latest installment of NJFOG’s \”affirmative litigation\” initiative, begun in 2014, intended to give teeth to the State’s open public meetings and records laws and to increase compliance by public agencies statewide.

Instructors for the FBI’s Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted (LEOKA) Program begin each class addressing foot pursuit by asking students, How many officers received some form of foot-pursuit training from their respective agencies? On average only 1 to 3 percent of class participants give an affirmative answer. In courses dealing with facing a drawn gun, trainers ask, How many officers’ agencies provide training for drawn-gun scenarios? Approximately 10 to 20 percent of students answer that they received this type of instruction.

Statistically, officers’ chance of becoming involved in a foot pursuit greatly exceeds their likeliness of ever facing a drawn-gun scenario. Yet, how many foot pursuits could end with an officer encountering a drawn gun? If proactive training is a key to reducing risk to law enforcement personnel, agencies should train for foot pursuits beforehand to minimize the chance of officers facing a drawn gun while on duty.

Manslaughter plea affirmed in 2011 Deptford fatal stabbing
