New Jersey Blood Services Declares Unprecedented Second Blood Emergency of the Summer 

New Jersey Blood Services (NJBS) today announced an unprecedented second blood emergency this summer after the regional blood supply fell to its lowest level since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Just weeks after declaring a blood emergency around Memorial Day, NJBS is once again urgently calling on the public to donate blood. This unprecedented second blood emergency is due to a combination of factors, including extreme heat, severe storms, prolonged power outages, and ongoing storm cleanup, all of which have significantly reduced donor turnout.

The FDA’s Sunscreen Rules Leave Americans Exposed

Just in time for the beginning of summer, the Food and Drug Administration has approved a new sunscreen ingredient for the first time in more than a quarter-century.

Bemotrizinol is a next-generation ultraviolet filter already widely used in other nations. The FDA fully approved the ingredient for use in the United States this month.

It’s progress, but it does not address the deeper problem. The FDA still regulates sunscreen as if it were a high-risk drug rather than a low-risk cosmetic product. That regulatory posture keeps the latest in sunscreen technology off the U.S. market and deprives Americans of some of the most effective tools available for preventing skin cancer.

Route 42 northbound, I-295 northbound, I-76 eastbound overnight lane and ramp closures this week in Bellmawr

Overnight lane and ramp closures are scheduled on Route 42 northbound, I-295 northbound and I-76 eastbound this week as the Direct Connection project advances in Bellmawr, Camden County. The lane and ramp closures, as well as traffic slowdowns, are necessary to install structural steel. Motorists are advised to use caution and expect delays when traveling through the work zones.

Route 42 northbound to I-76 westbound Lane Closures

Beginning at 10 p.m. tonight, Monday, July 6 until 5 a.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, July 7 and again on Tuesday, July 7; Wednesday, July 8; Thursday, July 9 and Saturday, July 11 at the same time, the three left lanes on Route 42 northbound will be closed between Leaf Avenue (mile post 13.8) and where Route 42 northbound splits to I-76 westbound and I-295 northbound (mile post 14.2). Motorists will be directed to take Exit 1B to I-295 northbound/Trenton. Stay left to take Exit 27B to I-76 to I-676 and Route 130/Camden/Philadelphia.

Camden County Roadwork Projects

Several roadway projects will be underway across Camden County during the week of July 6 to July 10. 

“Motorists should plan ahead to take alternate routes and give themselves plenty of time to get to their destinations,” said Commissioner Al Dyer, liaison to the Department of Public Works. “Also, remember that when you’re traveling through a construction area, please slow down and stay alert for crew members and debris.”

Audubon

·       Crews will be working on East Atlantic Avenue on Monday, July 6, to Friday, July 10, from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. There will be a partial eastbound road closure between East Merchant Street in Audubon and Station Avenue in Haddon Heights.

·       PSE&G will be working on 241 Crystal Lake Avenue on Wednesday, July 8, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There will be a full road closure between Prospect Avenue & Hopkins Road.

Black Horse Pike/Route 168 southbound closed and detoured overnight this week

Black Horse Pike/Route 168 southbound is scheduled to be closed and detoured overnight this week at Lower Landing Road for water main installation in Gloucester Township, Camden County. In addition, traffic will be shifted on Black Horse Pike/Route 168 northbound north of the Route 42 interchange.

PSE&G Installing New Gas Main on Haddon Avenue

Beginning Monday, July 6, PSE&G will start installation of a new gas main on Haddon Avenue in Haddonfield. Crews will begin work on Monday, July 6, and is expected to continue through the end of August, weather permitting.

Crews will perform daytime work from Marne Avenue to Kings Highway from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., followed by nighttime work at the intersection of Haddon Avenue and Kings Highway. Upon completion of the Marne Avenue to Kings Highway section, daytime work will continue from Kings Highway to Ellis Street.

FSIS Issues Public Health Alert for A Ready-To-Eat Beef Jerky Product

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is issuing a public health alert for a beef jerky product due to misbranding and undeclared allergen. The product contains wheat, a known allergen, which is not declared on the product label. A recall was not requested because the product is no longer available for purchase.

NJMVC Facilities to Close July 3-4 for Holiday

All New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) facilities, including agencies, road test sites, and inspection stations, will be closed Friday, July 3, 2026, and Saturday, July 4, 2026, in observance of the upcoming holiday.

The Commission’s website, NJMVC.gov, remains open 24/7, providing a convenient way for customers to complete their motor vehicle business. Over 25 online services are available, including driver license renewals and replacements, vehicle registration renewals and replacements, address changes, driver record requests, personalized and specialty plate requests, and more.

New Jerseyans in need of motor vehicle services should always visit the website first to use online services, schedule required appointments for in-person services and driver testing, and resolve the most common NJMVC-related customer concerns.
