In just eight days, ACCT Philly has taken in 200 dogs and 190 cats—our shelter is at full capacity.
In 2025, we cared for 20,057 animals, a significant increase from the previous year. Despite this, 87% were reunited with families, transferred to rescues, or adopted, thanks to strong community support. However, the need hasn’t slowed. In less than two weeks of 2026, we’ve already taken in 390 animals.
Space is critically limited. We’re averaging 30 dogs a day and urgently need adopters and fosters.
With support from the BISSELL Pet Foundation, we’re offering $10 adoptions for all animals in foster care and at the shelter in an urgent effort to #EmptyTheShelter. Rescue partners can receive $750 for pulling dogs over 40 lbs, and foster families receive a $200 gift card for fostering a dog for four weeks.

GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ (May 15, 2022)–Just about everyone knows that there is a baby formula shortage. Many of you are experiencing it. What is happening? This is America and every day we look more like a third-world country rather than the richest and most powerful nation in the world.
So, what is the story behind the story with the formula shortage? Let’s start with a few facts. The United States makes 98% of the formula we use. This is a good thing; it keeps jobs in America and we have much more control over the quality and distribution of the product. The majority of formula is used by WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) recipients. The federal government has a contract with Abbott Company to supply the formula for WIC and SNAP (formerly food stamps) administrated through the states. The states give a “discount” to Abbott et al. up to 85% This is very profitable for Abbott and the federal and state governments don’t really care because it is “We, the People” who pay for it.
Each year between and four babies are reported with infections from a bacteria called cronobacter sakazakii. Never before has a plant been closed. The closest I was able to find for the number of babies who became ill this year was four. Two babies recovered and two died. So, at some point the government closed the plant for inspection. This was the right thing to do. However, I could only come to an inspection date between January 31, 2022 and March 18, 2022. What was the time span between the disclosure of the problem, the decision to close the Michigan plant, the inspection and conclusion? We don’t know.
At the point it was determined to close the plant there should have also been a plan for an alternate source of formula. There are other U.S. based companies; but there is no evidence that this was done. We have to be more careful than usual because these are our babies, not IPhones or clothes, etc. In the past it was found that the Chinese were putting melamine into their formula. We grey hairs remember unbreakable dinnerware called Melmac which was taken off the market because it caused…yes, cancer. Where we get the replacement formula is essential but did anyone look right here in America?
According to the Washington Examiner, May 13, 2022 the inspection is complete, the results are in but the Food and Drug Administration won’t specify the exact criteria for full approval to re-open Abbott’s Michigan plant. The inspection found some of the bacteria but none in the processing area. Samples of the formula were completely free of the bacteria. Everything sounds good.
Bacteria, like humans and all other living things, has its own DNA. Scientists were able to determine that the bacterial DNA in the babies did not come from the closed plant. So why hasn’t the FDA provided a date or even criteria for a full opening?
This is where you have to take off your scientist’s hat and put on your lawyer’s hat. On May 12, 2022 the Washington Post issued a headline about the “faux outrage” over this supposed problem. The term “faux outrage” is outrageous in itself but the article went on to say there is no real formula shortage. “They” were just following the law. Fortunately, The Post printed excerpts from the law. In my opinion, for what that’s worth, it all has to do with politics and money. Here’s what happened:

President Biden can solve the problem with the stroke of a pen. I am usually against Executive Orders. I feel Presidents use them to make law that would normally not get through Congress. In this case I am exasperated that President hasn’t already signed an executive order to alter the “formula or milk for illegal babies” to “Give the illegals formula or milk after all the citizen and legal resident babies have been fed.”
The Philadelphia Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting and asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect. The incident occurred in the city’s Feltonville neighborhood following a confrontation over a package theft. The suspect managed to evade capture and was lost in the surrounding area.
Suspect Description: light-skinned Hispanic male, stocky build, with a possible goatee wearing a brown coat, black pants, and grey/light grey sneakers. He remains at large.
The PPD Northwest Detective Division is attempting to identify the individual responsible for this institutional vandalism.
On January 4, 2026 at approximately 5:25am at 6498 Ridge Ave the offender spray painted racist slogans on the exterior walls of Roxborough High School.
Surveillance cameras captured an unknown male approaching the school on foot coming east bound on Fountain St towards Pechin St. He then started to spray paint walls and continued towards the back of the school and further vandalizing school walls. He was last seen headed towards Ridge Ave.
On Sunday, January 4, 2026, officers responded to a report of a shooting in a retail store parking lot on the 5200 block of Germantown Avenue. They found a male victim on the ground and detained another male at the scene. The 32-year-old victim was transported to a hospital and listed in critical condition with multiple gunshot and stab wounds. The detained male is 37 years old.
Investigators identified a related crime scene with blood evidence leading from the parking lot to a nearby residence in the same area. A second victim, a 34-year-old male, arrived at a hospital by private vehicle with a gunshot wound to the arm and was listed in stable condition.
We are sad to announce the death of Richard John Cyzewski, beloved husband, father, grandfather, mummer, and friend to many, on December 31, 2025.
Richard was born in Philadelphia, PA, on August 15, 1930, to Paul and Rose Cyzewski. He attended Northeast High School, and was a star player on their basketball team. One of his first jobs was at the iconic Stetson Hat Company where he met their most famous customer, John Wayne.
Richard proudly served in the United States Marine Corps. during the Korean War. His difficult to pronounce last name was changed to Ski by a Parris Island boot camp Colonel. It became Richard’s life-long nickname. After proudly surviving boot camp, he was stationed at the Pentagon as a staff car driver, responsible for providing specialized transportation services for high-ranking officers, distinguished visitors, and command staff. His most memorable passenger was Neil Armstrong who Ski described as the nicest guy he met in the Corps.
On Thursday, January 1, 2026, at approximately 11:14 a.m., officers from the 2nd District responded to a reported shooting in the 7100 block of Oakland Street. Upon arrival, officers located a gunshot victim. The victim, identified as 52-year-old Luis Colon of the 7100 block of Oakland Street, was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest. He was transported by police to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:55 a.m. Flash information was broadcast over police radio, indicating the suspects fled the scene in a dark-colored Chrysler 300.
The Philadelphia Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in locating a vehicle wanted for investigation in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred at approximately 3:44 a.m. on December 20, 2025, on the 5600 block of Lancaster Avenue. The vehicle involved is described as a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4XE, red or burgundy in color, bearing Pennsylvania registration MXB-1835. The vehicle is expected to have significant front-end damage, primarily to the passenger-side fender and headlight area, with the passenger-side headlight believed to be damaged as a result of the crash. The vehicle was last seen traveling westbound on the 6000 block of Lancaster Avenue.

On Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at approximately 2:51 AM, Philadelphia Police officers responded to a 911 call for a “person screaming” on the 1800 block of North Bailey Street. The responding officers, Officer 1 and Officer A, both assigned to the 22nd District, were in full uniform and operating a marked police vehicle.
Upon arrival, both officers activated their Body-Worn Cameras (BWCs). As they approached the residence, the officers heard arguing inside and a female voice yelling. The officers knocked, received no answer, and attempted the door handle. A child ultimately opened the door, allowing the officers to enter to check on the occupants’ safety.
The Philadelphia Police Department is requesting the public’s help in locating missing juvenile Anthony Clark. Anthony was last seen Tuesday December 30, 2025, at 12:08pm, on the 66xx block of Souder St.
Anthony is 14 years-of-age, 5’4”, 120 lbs., wearing a gray Under Armour sweatsuit, black Essentials hoodie, black Polo T-shirt and gray Asics sneakers.
