Fatal Accident Involving SEPTA Train and a Pedestrian

The following information is preliminary and subject to change. Updates will be provided as they become available.

On Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at approximately 1:30 a.m., a fatal accident occurred involving a SEPTA train and a pedestrian at 4200 North Broad Street on the Broad Street Line (Orange Line) at the Hunting Park Station. Preliminary investigation indicates that the pedestrian exited the train as it arrived at the station. As the train began moving southbound to continue along the tracks, the individual stepped backward, fell into the space between the train and the platform, and was subsequently struck and run over by the train. Philadelphia Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and pronounced the male pedestrian deceased at approximately 2:03 a.m. 

The decedent was later identified as 41-year-old Terrell Burton of the 1600 block of West Allegheny Avenue.

The investigation is ongoing with the Crash Investigation Division.

In a separate incident, on January 20, 2026, at approximately 9:15 p.m., officers from the 12th District responded to a radio call reporting a shooting at the 5500 block of Chester Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located a crime scene both inside and in front of the Chester Convenience Store. Shortly thereafter, a 17-year-old male victim arrived at Penn-Presbyterian Medical Center via private vehicle, suffering from two gunshot wounds to his right arm. He was listed in stable condition. 

At this time, no motive has been determined, and no arrests have been made. 

The Shooting Investigation Group is continuing to investigate this incident.

Philly Highways Get a Green Makeover

The Office of Clean and Green Initiatives, in partnership with Mural Arts Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, announced the “Gateways to Philadelphia” Anti-Graffiti & Highway Beautification project.

The endeavor focuses on highway beautification and landscaping improvements for major entryways and interchanges spanning from Philadelphia International Airport and 30th Street Station to Independence Hall. It blends graffiti removal, gardening updates, and mural art to enhance our key roads.

Noteworthy Mention: A forthcoming semiquincentennial-themed mural on I-76 at Spring Garden Street will nod to Philadelphia’s pivotal role in U.S. history.

Why It Matters: This initiative helps shape visitors’ first impression of Philadelphia upon their arrival.

U.S. planning major military base upgrade in Greenland amid diplomatic crisis, officials say U.S. troops on standby for possible deployment to Minnesota, and military strike takes out another ISIS leader.

1.      Major airfield upgrades are in the works for the U.S. military’s base in Greenland even as a diplomatic crisis between the United States and NATO allies in Europe ratchets up over President Donald Trump’s push to take control of the territory. The plan calls for spending up to $25 million for a new runway lighting system, river crossing bridge and related projects to improve flight operations at Pituffik Space Base, the military’s Arctic hub, according to a new government solicitation for bids. The territory has emerged as a geopolitical flashpoint. On Saturday, Trump upped the ante in his push to acquire Greenland, saying he will impose new tariffs on several European countries in lieu of a deal for the United States to take possession of the semi-autonomous Danish territory.

Philadelphia Zoo Announces New Exclusive Key to the Zoo Behind Scenes Tours

Philadelphia, PA – Philadelphia Zoo announces a new 2026 Key to the Zoo Behind-the-Scenes Tour with dates and expanded times this January and February. After the first Key to the Zoo tours last year, the sold-out program is back with new dates, new experiences, expanded hours and expanded dates. This never-done-before tour invites guests on the most exclusive tour ever offered by America’s first Zoo. Guests will spend three hours with a member of the Zoo’s Conservation Education team visiting several behind-the-scenes areas that are not typically available to the public.

Each tour will be unique, but will include at least four experiences where you will get up and close and personal with the animals and get to learn about their individual personalities from the keepers who care for them. Each tour also includes a visit to the Solitude, a one-of-a-kind gift from the animals, complimentary parking, and regular Zoo admission for the day of the tour.

On select dates, the tour will include a meet-and-greet with a few of our world-famous baby Galapagos tortoises. Please be sure to select those dates if you would like to meet them! Please note that this experience is not handicap accessible and is for ages 5+. Waivers must be completed onsite to participate. Dates include January 18 and 24, and February 1, 7, 15 and 21, with morning and afternoon sessions available this year. Subaru Park to Host PLL’s Philadelphia Waterdogs Homecoming, Inaugural WLL Championship

The Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) and Women’s Lacrosse League (WLL) today announced both leagues will compete at Subaru Park and host the inaugural WLL Championship, and PLL homecoming weekend for the hometown Philadelphia Waterdogs Aug. 14-16, 2026.

The PLL returns to Subaru Park for its tour-based regular season, where the Philadelphia Waterdogs will host a homecoming double-header in Week 12 of PLL action. The Waterdogs will begin their 2026 season May 9 and 10 at PLL Opening Weekend at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, Utah.

The Women’s Lacrosse League will take the field at Subaru Park for the inaugural WLL Championship to culminate its inaugural regular season, where the league’s original teams will compete in the 10-versus-10 format, successfully debuted at the 2025 WLL All-Star Game.

Philadelphia Police Seek New Leads on 20th Anniversary of Cold Case Killing of Local Nun

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Police Department and the Citizens Crime Commission are renewing their appeal for public assistance in solving a fatal hit-and-run cold case that claimed the life of a beloved community member two decades ago.

Last Friday, January 9, 2026, marked 20 years since Sister Paul Mercedes Perreca, IHM, was struck and killed while walking to church. Despite the passage of time, investigators remain committed to identifying the driver responsible and providing closure to Sister Paul Perreca’s family, friends, and former students.

Sister Paul Mercedes Perreca was a prominent figure in the local community, serving as a dedicated eighth-grade teacher at St. Martin of Tours School. Her death left a profound void in the parish and the lives of the many students she mentored.

Wanted: Suspect for Homicide in the 15th District

On December 22, 2025, at 12:17 PM, the above depicted vehicle was used in the Homicide that occurred in the 15th District at 4200 Torresdale Avenue. The vehicle was last captured east on 2200 Adams Avenue.

Vehicle Description: 2014-2016, Navy Blue, Jeep Grand Cherokee. At the time of the homicide, the vehicle was bearing a Temp Tag of #4351-125 from an unknown state. The Cherokee has a broken sunroof window and a shattered rear side cabin window on the passenger’s side.

Wanted: Suspect for Burglary/Sexual Assault in the 5th District [VIDEO]

The Philadelphia Police Department Special Victims Unit is attempting to identify the male suspect depicted in this video compilation. He is believed to frequent the Manyunk section of Philadelphia.

On January 1, 2026, at approximately 1:30am, the victim, a 20-year-old-female, and a witness were walking near Cresson Street and Grape Street when they observed an unknown white male following closely behind them. They did not interact with the male, but they became uncomfortable with him walking near them, and went quickly into their residence. Several minutes later the victim fell asleep on the living room sofa and was later awoken at approximately 1:55am by an unknown male standing over her indecently exposing himself. When the victim yelled for him to leave the residence, the suspect left. After the suspect left the residence, the victim saw that her purse had been moved and the contents had been dumped onto the floor. At this time the only thing that appears to be missing is $20.00 that was inside the purse. The victim believes that the person that was inside her residence was the same person that was following her earlier in the evening. The witness was upstairs on the second floor during the incident and had no interaction with the offender.
