GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ (September 21, 2026)(CNBNews)–The mayor and common council of the City of Gloucester City at its September 21, 2026 Caucus meeting passed 15 resolutions suspending the rental property licenses based on complaints filed by William Johnson, Gloucester City Code Enforcement/Housing.
Chapter 55 of the Gloucester City Code is the municipal Housing Code. It establishes minimum safety, maintenance, and habitability standards for residential and nonresidential properties, and covers crucial local mandates including rental inspections, certificates of occupancy, and property transfers. The mayor and council approved three ordinances for second reading. They will be voted on at the regular council meeting on September 24, 2026.
>An ordinance to release, vacate and extinguish any and all public rights in and to a portion of property bordering Fourth and One-Half Street on second reading.
>A $600,000 Bond Ordinance authorizing the acquisition of equipment for the completion of various improvements to the sewer and water utility systems in the City of Goucester City.

Tax liens were placed against the owners of five properties for not maintaining the outside of their premises. The liens filed were for the costs incurred for man hours spent by city workers to clean up those residences.

>A $668.50 lien was levied against Torres Devon Genao & Velazquez, 515 Mercer St.
>A $505.20 lien was levied against 208 Ridge Ave, LLC, 208 Ridge Ave., which is vacant.
>A $265.20 lien was levied against Maple Terrace Assoc. LLC 10 Lehigh Avenue
>A $480.00 lien was levied against Alfredo Mejia Copo 300 N. Broadway a vacant lot
Rem Foreclosures Held by the City for Years
A resolution was passed authorizing In Rem Foreclosure of tax sale certificates held by the City of Gloucester City. There is a need to foreclose these certificates to return the properties to the active tax roles. The properties include:
229 Essex Street sold to the city on January 16, 2020
408 Market Street sold to the city on January 11, 2018
807 Cumberland Street sold to the city on March 7, 2024
303 Filmore Street sold to the city on March 7, 2024
Mayor and council announed a $25,000 Recreation Facility Enhancement Grant was received.
