Bridgeton Man Sentenced to 5 Years for Identity Theft

Woodbury, NJ – Akeem Johnson, 43, of Bridgeton, was sentenced to 5 years in state prison today by the Honorable Russell A. DePersia for identity theft, pursuant to a plea agreement.

According to documents filed in this case and statements made in open court: Johnson, who worked for a third-party contractor responsible for delivering Amazon packages to USPS facilities, failed to deliver multiple pallets of packages and used a co-worker’s identification to access an Amazon facility in Logan Township to take possession of the packages. The stolen merchandise was valued at more than $75,000.

Pursuant to the plea agreement, he was sentenced to 5 years in state prison. Johnson was also sentenced to concurrent sentences for two cases out of Cumberland County.

The State was represented by Deputy Chief Assistant Prosecutor Rex Utuk.

JerseyCan Opens Enrollment For It’s 2026-2027 Fellowships

JerseyCAN, the only statewide advocacy organization in New Jersey committed to ensuring access to high-quality public schools for every child, regardless of zip code, cultural background, and socioeconomic status, announced today that it has formally opened enrollment for the 7th year of its statewide Fellowship programs – JerseyCAN’s Teacher Leader Policy Fellowship and Parent Champions for Strong Schools Fellowship.

JerseyCAN developed each competitive fellowship to foster statewide dialogue and change in education policy, strengthen the voices of the three key constituencies within the state’s education decision-making landscape, and cultivate a strong, connected network of education advocates across New Jersey. Since its inception, the JerseyCAN fellowship program has helped develop over 100 leaders across the state actively involved in education policy decisions and activism. After multiple successful years with its Teacher and Parent Fellowships, JerseyCAN expanded last year to reach students with its newly created JerseyCAN Student Civic Leaders Fellowship. The addition was led in partnership with Samantha Shane, a 2022–23 JerseyCAN Teacher Fellow, who advocated for the third student-focused program to empower public school students by equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to become effective advocates for issues that directly impact them and their peers.

New Jersey Has Free Beginner Fishing Workshops This Fall

New Jersey is offering free hands-on fishing workshops for beginners and families at four locations this fall. All equipment, bait, and tackle are provided—you just show up ready to learn.

Workshops cover fish biology, equipment setup, casting, safety, and fishing regulations. You’ll practice your new skills with a guided fishing experience at each location.

Three workshops are scheduled in September and October across North, Central, and South Jersey. This includes a Grandparents’ Day workshop on September 13 in Hackettstown. Programs are open to ages 8 and up (some workshops 10+).

Philadelphia Police Investigating Double Shooting

On Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at approximately 2:49 p.m., Philadelphia Police responded to a double shooting on the highway in the 2900 block of North Broad Street. A 36-year-old female sustained two gunshot wounds and was transported by police to Temple University Hospital, where she was placed in critical condition. A 41-year-old male sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and was transported by SEPTA Police to Temple University Hospital, where he was also placed in critical condition.

The scene is being held, and the investigation remains ongoing with the Shooting Investigation Group (SIG).

Eligible Families Can Claim a Child Tax Credit of Up to $1,000

If you had a child aged five or under in 2025 and you don’t usually file taxes because your income is below the filing threshold, you might qualify for a refundable Child Tax Credit of up to $1,000. A new free website called SimpleFile makes it easy to claim.

Many lower-income families miss out on this credit simply because they aren’t required to file taxes and don’t realize they can still claim it. More than 200,000 New Jersey families already claim the Child Tax Credit each year, and thousands more qualify but haven’t filed.

SimpleFile takes about 15 minutes to complete and is available in both English and Spanish. A video to help guide applicants is on YouTube.

Traffic Advisory – Route 70

Route 70 is scheduled have lane closures in both directions Friday night between Frontage Road/Covered Bridge Road and Springdale Road/CR 673 in Cherry Hill, Camden County.

Beginning at 8 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, September 11 until 5 a.m. Saturday, September 12, lane closures are scheduled on Route 70 eastbound and westbound from Frontage Road/Covered Bridge Road to Springdale Road/CR 673. The closures are expected to begin in the right and center lanes, before moving to the left and center lanes as work progresses. The lane closures are necessary to reopen the right shoulder and implement a long-term left lane closure. The long-term left lane closures are necessary for median restoration, including curb repairs and landscaping, and are expected to remain in place for approximately two months.

Fall Bow Opens Saturday 9/12 In Early Zone

The Fall Bow Deer Season opens this Saturday in certain Deer Management Zones. The first deer must be antlerless (except for youth hunters) through October 2.

The season then opens statewide on Saturday, October 3. Refer to the Deer Hunting by Season and Zones for specific bag limits and other information.

Permits for all deer permit seasons and bear hunting season will go on sale Monday, September 14!

The Rumor of a Shooting Not True

GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ (Sept. 11, 2026)(CNBNews)-There was a rumor yesterday that someone got shot in the area of Gloucester Catholic High School. From what we learned that rumor is not true.

According to information that was distributed by Principal Thomas Iacovone Jr., a Gloucester City resident suffered a serious injury after an apparent fall across from where buses pick-up students. Gloucester City Emergency personnel arrived quickly and the resident was conscious when they arrived. No students were involved but several students witnessed the injury while loading the buses.

9/11 Survivor-Audubon Native to Speak at Commemoration

9/11 Survivor and Audubon native will speak at Camden County College, Blackwood campus today at 12 p.m. Louis Giaccardo went to work on the 87^th floor of the World Trade Center’s South Tower on the morning of September 11, 2001. When the towers were struck, the Audubon native helped more than 40 people evacuate to safety, just 25 minutes before the towers collapsed. Louis will share his powerful story of resilience and courage at Camden County College’s commemoration of the 25^th anniversary of the attacks.

“We are honored to have Mr. Giaccardo speak at Camden County College,” said Dr. Lovell Pugh-Bassett, President. “We invite everyone to hear his firsthand account of that tragic day, and his inspirational story of survival.”

The event is presented by the Center for Cultural Engagement at Camden County College.
