Sluggball, the new baseball-inspired competition built around the art of hitting a baseball, will host the 2026 Sluggball All-Star Classic on Saturday, Aug. 8, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
The inaugural event will feature retired Philadelphia Phillies and Major League Baseball Alumni competing in a fast-paced exhibition designed to introduce fans to Sluggball. The event will be presented as a special on NBC Sports Regional Networks, with multiple encores on NBC Sports Philadelphia, NBC Sports Boston, NBC Sports Bay Area and NBC Sports California.

In its inaugural year, Martyrs Day, a new national day of remembrance honoring American protesters and activists whose lives were lost in the ongoing struggle for civil rights, justice and equality in the United States, will be recognized nationwide on July 5, 2026.

Philadelphia athletes across the city are participating in a new initiative to welcome the nine nations set to compete in Philadelphia during the FIFA World Cup 2026™.
The “Philly Match Ball” program includes nine official FIFA match balls, with each ball representing one of the participating nations scheduled to play a group stage match at Philadelphia Stadium. Each squad will receive a ball as a welcome to the city and a celebration of the global game coming to Philadelphia.
To date, the balls have been autographed by Bryce Harper and Trea Turner of the Philadelphia Phillies; Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers; DeVonta Smith and Zack Baun of the Philadelphia Eagles; and Dan Vladar and Sean Couturier of the Philadelphia Flyers. Additional athletes are scheduled to sign the balls ahead of Philadelphia’s first match on Sunday, June 14.
Maryland hunters harvested a total of 5,094 wild turkeys during the 2026 spring season. This year’s harvest was 5% higher than last year but remained below the record harvest of 5,356 set in 2023.
“Favorable weather helped contribute to another productive spring season for Maryland turkey hunters,” Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Wildlife and Heritage Service Director Karina Stonesifer said. “While populations can fluctuate across regions and from year to year, turkey hunters continue to enjoy quality hunting opportunities across Maryland.”
Garrett County reported the highest harvest with 542 turkeys, followed by Charles County with 452 and Worcester County with 430 turkeys. Allegany and Washington counties also reported over 300 birds each.
Youth hunters started the spring turkey season with the Junior Turkey Hunt, April 11-12. A total of 441 wild turkeys were taken during that weekend, representing 8% of the total. Sunday hunting accounted for 14% of the statewide harvest.
Hunting licenses for the 2026-27 season will be available starting July 1 on the Maryland DNR website. The major fall hunting seasons begin Sept. 1 with mourning dove season, and deer hunting begins with archery season on Sept. 11.

On May 17, 2026, at 11:50am on the 100 block of Manheim St the offender shot several times into a crowd after a neighborhood fight.
Philadelphia Police recovered surveillance footage which showed a neighborhood fight between several males out on the 100 block of Manheim St. After the fight one of the males called for assistance and two males shortly showed up with guns. The first male seen fires several shots into a crowd. A second male associated with the shooter is seen with a gun but does not fire his gun. There were no injuries reported during this incident.
At approximately 1:37 p.m., Philadelphia Police from the 3rd District responded to a report of a stabbing in the 2100 block of S. Christopher Columbus Blvd. Upon arrival, officers located a 33-year-old male suffering from multiple stab wounds.
The victim was treated at the scene by Medic 43 and transported to Jefferson Hospital in stable condition.
Preliminary findings indicate the victim was assaulted by an individual known to him. The suspect remains at large, and the motive behind the attack is currently unknown. No arrests have been made, and no weapons have been recovered at this time.
The Philadelphia Police Department’s Homicide Unit has arrested four individuals in connection with the death of 53-year-old Vincent Good, whose remains were discovered inside a suitcase and industrial trash bags in a Kensington alleyway last week.
On Friday, May 22, 2026, at approximately 9:25 a.m., 25th District officers responded to a report of a hospital case at 6XX E. Hilton Street. A witness searching for scrap material reported finding a human upper torso inside a discarded suitcase. A subsequent police investigation uncovered additional human remains in an early stage of decomposition inside two large trash bags. Responding medical personnel pronounced the victim deceased at 9:28 a.m. The Office of the Medical Examiner has since identified the victim as Good, a resident of the 5700 block of Leonard Street, and ruled his death a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds.
Five people, including four young children, were injured Thursday eveningafter being struck by a vehicle in Northeast Philadelphia. One person is currently in custody.
The incident occurred at approximately 6:04 p.m. in the 4700 block of Marple Street. During the incident, an adult female and four juveniles were hit by a burgundy Chrysler 300.
Four victims sustained minor injuries and are reportedly in stable condition. Emergency medical services responded to the scene and transported the victims to local hospitals:
Einstein Medical Center: An adult female and a 5-year-old girl.
St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children: A 3-year-old girl and a 6-year-old girl.
Jefferson Torresdale Hospital: A 4-year-old boy. Is currently listed critical condition.
One individual has been taken into custody in connection with the incident. The vehicle involved has been recovered and is being held by investigators.
The identity of the driver has not yet been released. The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

The Philadelphia Police Department’s Shooting Investigation Group is currently investigating the shooting of a 19-year-old male that occurred early Thursday evening in the city’s 12th District.
At approximately 5:21 p.m., responding officers located the teenage victim suffering from a gunshot wound on the highway along the 70xx block of Greenway Avenue. Police immediately transported the victim to Penn-Presbyterian Medical Center, where he is currently listed in stable condition. At this time, investigators have not established a motive, no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains active and ongoing.
